I’m a frickin genius.

Context: my kid is mildly allergic to citric acid and citric fruit. Brings out eczema. And citric acid is in SO many things. And it’s painful checking ingredients lists for it.

This morning I wondered: can my phone OCR the ingredients list and check it?

My first thought was to make a little web app. But there doesn’t seem to be a OCR in web browsers yet.

But I KNOW my phone can get text from images.

@pranav @slothrop @neil I did! A couple of years ago. It was objectively quite-good but it felt like there was so much going on and so many decisions to make about how to use it that I just went back to the simplicity of gnome.

@slothrop @neil Oh, I recently got my first macbook and have found it quite disappointing. Really highlighted just how far the free desktop has come when I can get the most-premium option going and find it lacking in features!

@SecureOwl my first proper IT job, and last Windows one, was an upgrade to server 03 and I still forget that it's not modern.

A few months back I was in a call with a bank trying to work out how to get their 03 machine to talk modern enough TLS to interact with our app...
