APOD from 2025-06-16

APOD is 30 Years Old Today

Celebrating 30 years, today's APOD forms Van Gogh's "Starry Night" from 1,836 past images arranged into 32,232 tiles. Thanks to all contributors and readers for sharing the cosmic journey.

This is the graph where you should one day be able to see a decrease in how quickly the COโ‚‚ concentration is rising. Even if our own COโ‚‚ emissions would decrease however, it might not happen, because it appears the Earth's ability to absorb COโ‚‚ from the atmosphere is declining, which is extremely worrying.

"Nobody is fired for chosing Microsoft," lautet ein geflรผgeltes Wort.

I hope US folks on the No Kings rallies know how much people outside the US are heartened to see them. We always knew the US is full of very fine people who totally reject and revile what's happening, but my god it's good to see it.
btw, I censored the 2025 number in the graph since it is terrifying and hopefully improves over the year.. Lots of background on the COโ‚‚ cycle is here: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/on-climate-change-and-management/
On Climate Change and (Active) Climate Management - Bert Hubert's writings

Nothing on this page is factually controversial. However, many things in this post make for uncomfortable reading. And, climate discourse is now so politicized that many factual statements are taken as dog whistles. For example, in what follows I will state that climate has always been changing, and has in fact never been stable for very long. This is 100% true, but people interpret this as if the writer means that our current climate change is not caused by human beings, or is nothing to worry about.

@bert_hubert for simple calculations I really like unit-aware calculator qalculate: https://qalculate.github.io/ it's probably my most-used tool on my $dayjob
Qalculate! - the ultimate desktop calculator

And as multiple people pointed out, even in megacorporations some good work is getting done because there are people who deeply care, enough so that they fight the idiocy to make useful things still happen.

@bert_hubert I think there are a lot of people who care about good work and will do good work for the sake of it, often behind the backs of the idiots. They won't, of course, get any praise or credit for it because these managers, not having a clue, think it's because of their genius.

I've seen this over and over again.

@bert_hubert
Earth Atmosphere and absorbers run full... this is like a Memorydump and System Reset for some Bio-VR have to reboot. With infinite Time, the System will clean the Atmos in Billion years from Ocean and Mineral Binding and store Plants to Oil.

Fun Fact, there was a Time where Bacteria wasnt present to produce Oil! And now it wont do either - ugly Hack of Evolution. So Reboot will run Memory checking and maybe a debugger first and rebuild -1000 years last Checkpoint ;)
