When cool air is trapped at ground level by a warm air mass, it's known as a temperature inversion. Visible effect is dense fog. But it can have an effect on radio signal propagation, where VHF and higher frequency signals can be carried much further than the normal line-of-sight to the horizon, known as tropospheric ducting.
