My winter break #FacultyDevelopment reading list:

22 days working from home (~24 hours of commuting time saved; 317 miles of driving saved = ~14.5 gallons of gas = ~$65)

18.5 commutes via car (14.4 miles per trip; 266 miles total, which is about 12 gallons of gas with a total cost of ~$55; ~17 hours in the car)

3.5 commutes via public transportation (~9 hours; ~$42)

3 days away at a conference (plane trip)

1 commute via carpool (in someone else's car)

2/2

Today was the last day of the semester so I have complete data on my modes of transportation to work and back, and number of days working from home for this fall, including the week before classes started (numbers reflect round trip travel; .5 = one direction of a commute):

29 commutes on the ebike (18 miles per trip; 522 miles total; ~34 hours total; ~19 gallons of gas, and ~$85, saved)

The “E-Bike Effect:” Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%. Via @Treehugger

E-Bikers Ride Much Farther and More Frequently Than Regular Bikers

They are not 'cheating,' but are serious transportation.

Yesterday I taught my last class ever, a seminar for first-year grad students introducing them to the field. For this meaningful occasion, one of the articles I chose to discuss was Steven Roberts et al's excellent "Racial inequality in psychological research."

Today, Roberts posted a preprint describing appalling, racist treatment he has received from the journal since publication of that article.

The perverse irony of the editor's behavior should be lost on no one

After riding in #Belmont and #Wissahickon yesterday, I went the other direction and hit the trails in #ValleyForge this morning. Got a nice 41-mile ride in before the rain started.

Had a nice ride through #Wissahickon Park and #Belmont today. Such awesome #gravelcycling and #singletrack right in #Philadelphia #phillycycling

The University of Oregon, Oregon State, and Portland State have stalled in their negotiations with Elsevier and will allow their contract to lapse. They were unable to agree on a set of terms that was aligned with the universities' scholarly values and goals.

As a result, starting in 2023, the 3 universities will no longer receive new subscription-only content from Elsevier journals.

Happy to introduce myself. I’ve been researching/learning about African politics for thirty years. I’ve written extensively on #mali. I’ve been teaching at Haverford College for 20 years. I’m happy when I can get back to Maine and sit by the water. Mom to a teen. #grateful
