from alex (dremenec.com):

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs.

However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!

Being a web dev is SO WEIRD sometimes.

I'll do something totally normal like have a blue background and it'll be fine except one browser is all "I'm gonna make that pink lol" and the fix is to move the background by 0 pixels.

This isn't even a joke.

Safari has an issue with filter: blur() and color interpolation. It rendered a blue background as pink. The fix was to add translate3d(0, 0, 0) to promote into a layer.

Oh but the best part

Dude dumped the rom by CRASHING A GBA AND RECORDING THE CRASH SOUND FOR HOURS https://youtu.be/0-7PSmYYHF0

Yea so it turns out if you crash a gba game and wait long enough, the "crash sound" starts playing the entire address space, so if you take enough recordings and do a majority vote on differences, you can dump a ROM

How the fuck do people figure this shit pit

#cybersecurity zealots often shame humans for writing down their passwords, but as someone who just had to excavate the digital remains of a loved one who died suddenly:

*please* write down your credentials somewhere a trusted human can find them, especially your phone passcode and any primary passwords (like for email accounts, password manager, etc.)

the humans who care about you will need that access for many reasons; a "badass" threat model will only add helplessness to their grief

"They're Made out of Meat" is probably the most famous piece by the fabulous author Terry Bisson, who just passed away yesterday. https://www.mit.edu/people/dpolicar/writing/prose/text/thinkingMeat.html

who did it better?

Interesting - Sony has been using Flickr to host (and "hotlink") images on the official Playstation Blog since 2007. Which seems like a unusual hosting choice for a multinational media conglomerate 🤔

https://www.flickr.com/people/playstationblog/

The good news: If you ever need some Playstation game backgrounds, promo images etc. - here are the 54.835 images used on the PS blog since 2007 neatly sorted into albums. There is some cool stuff!

Also, to wrap it all off, here's Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) with some thoughts on Public Domain Day in all. https://pluralistic.net/2023/12/20/em-oh-you-ess-ee/#sexytimes

I like this section of the piece which screenshot is attached below as while today is a cause for celebration, don't forget that there's still corporations and the copyright cartel that are attempting to kill these efforts.
