As you all know, today is #PublicDomainDay, which celebrates a new set of works that are now available through the #PublicDomain.

Here are two landing pages for the occasion, which is a banger in all senses: https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2024/

There are so many good films, musicals, books and sound recordings that are now free from their shackles.

Public Domain Day 2024 | Duke University School of Law

Update: see what's entering the public domain on January 1, 2025! Tweet January 1, 2024 is Public Domain Day: Works from 1928 are open to all, as are sound recordings from 1923! By Jennifer Jenkins Director, Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain CC BY 4.0 Please note that this site is only about US law; the copyright terms in other countries may be different.[1] On January 1, 2024, thousands of copyrighted works from 1928 will enter the US public domain, along with sound recordings from 1923. They will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon.

But the most notable, in other words the Crown Jewel of this new set has to be Mickey Mouse 1.0 (aka Steamboat Willie) which was a nearly 90 year wait.

Here's a very good post on what you can and can't do with Mickey 1.0 as a whole. https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/mickey/

by Jennifer Jenkins, Director, Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain CC BY 4.0 On January 1, 2024, after almost a century of copyright protection, Mickey Mouse, or at least a version of Mickey Mouse, will enter the United States public domain. The first movies in which the iconic mouse appeared – Steamboat Willie and the silent version of Plane Crazy[1] – were made in 1928 and works from that year go into the public domain in the US on New Year’s Day 2024.[2] (Note that this article is only about US law.

Also, to wrap it all off, here's Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) with some thoughts on Public Domain Day in all. https://pluralistic.net/2023/12/20/em-oh-you-ess-ee/#sexytimes

I like this section of the piece which screenshot is attached below as while today is a cause for celebration, don't forget that there's still corporations and the copyright cartel that are attempting to kill these efforts.

Pluralistic: 2024’s public domain is a banger (20 Dec 2023) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

@joeo10 @pluralistic My one complaint: the Joker was created by Jerry Robinson. Bob Kane just signed his name to it.
@joeo10 So this is totally cool right!
