Pre-pre-pre-announcement that around the end of the year/early spring we'll be announcing some new funded residencies, based at our new studio in Cornwall to run around Aug/Sept 2026.

The theme this time is moths and their viruses - as part of @b_longdon's research grant on how viruses and their hosts co-evolve and what the limitations are on which ones can infect/be infected by which other ones.

As usual it'll be open to folks from any background, and anything goes.

Just discovered my bridged account over on bluesky has actual followers?! Hello! Amazing. Hope folks over there know they need to follow this account https://bsky.app/profile/ap.brid.gy so we can interact between the two places. More info here https://fed.brid.gy/

Does anyone with a better grasp on AI than me know: if folk are putting docs (for eg grant applications/papers) in chatGTP and similar to help improve text or even just reduce word count, does that doc then become part of the training data?
Missed the fact that UK folks who don't get free regular covid jabs can now buy them (epic inequality issues with it costing ~£100) e.g. https://www.boots.com/health-pharmacy/covid-19-information-products-and-testing/private-covid-vaccination#price

Do you know a Masters graduate looking for a #PhD opportunity? We have a PhD studentship opportunity with a short advertising period. Getting word out now.
The project will investigate aphid immunity. Lots learned since Gerardo 2010 (STING, protease cascades). Will use power of #Drosophila genetics to delve even deeper. Please get in touch here or by email if interested!

Could #antimicrobial peptides get around the threat of #antibiotic resistance #AMR? This study shows that random peptide mixtures are better than trad single-sequence #AntimicrobialPeptides at avoiding evolution of resistance in #Pseudomonas #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/3L9W9NO
The evolution of antimicrobial peptide resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is severely constrained by random peptide mixtures

Antimicrobial peptides have been suggested as a solution to combat the escalating public health threat of antibiotic resistance. This study demonstrates that random peptide mixtures are significantly better than traditional single-sequence antimicrobial peptides at preventing the development of resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In case not obvious to those outside the UK, 14 years have pushed UK universities to near bankruptcy. We're on a hiring freeze and redundancies for the foreseeable. And the problem is so big it won't be an easy fix for any incoming government. #ucu #University #education

How the Tories pushed universities to the brink of disaster

The long read: Over the past 14 years, the Conservative dream of a free market in higher education has collided with the harsh reality of austerity and the cultural resentment of the radical right – driving some institutions close to bankruptcy

2021: Viruscraft

A bizarrely timely pair of projects with virus researchers @b_longdon and Ben Ashby applying our techniques to making the invisible world of viruses more understandable.

This involved lots of workshops, visualisations, games - a giant virus interface in the Eden Project followed by a robot virus that evolves as you vaccinate a population of creatures to survive.

Viruscraft II

Viruscraft II is a game and installation for understanding how viruses co-evolve with their hosts, made in collaboration with Dr. Ben Ashby at the University of Bath.

It's our 10th birthday today!

To celebrate, throughout the day we'll be picking one of our favourite projects from every year. Lovely looking back and seeing how hard it is to pick, because somehow we enjoyed almost all of them.

A big hat tip due to @FoAM - up to 2021 we were called FoAM Kernow, and it was the fabulous and eclectic FoAM gang that helped us get on our feet and made space for our hopes.
