For the next few months, you will either send or receive messages like "hey, did you mean 2023?"
A busy week for #theiilab! Two MS students successfully defended, and two PhD students successfully qualified. Congratulations to Varnika and Prasanthi on degree completion, and Yuan and Tafadzwa (in pictures) on candidacy.
We developed a stripped-down image-based model to recognize some silent speech commands almost as fast as #speech. Then, evaluated target selection with #eye-gaze pointing + silent speech, where it was comparable to speech. Will present at #ISS2022 https://youtu.be/EZTcyicU5_0 #theiilab

#TiltWalker allows controlling #telepresence #robots with 1 hand by tilting phones by using a velocity-based CD mapping, optimizing interactions, visualization for comfort, clarity, legibility. It's faster, more accurate. Will present at #ISS2022 https://youtu.be/lpmMrlTekvY #theiilab

For the past couple of years, Introduction to HCI, the course I designed upon joining #UCMerced has been the most popular upper-division undergraduate course in CS. We opened registration on Monday, within two days, all 150 seats have been taken! #theiilab #cse155
We compared mid-air selection with Push, Tap, Dwell, Pinch augmented with Select, Hover & Select ultrasonic feedback in a Fitts' law study. Tap was the fastest, most accurate. Both feedback methods improved performance. Will present at #ISS2022 https://youtu.be/qUSAAMvqxF8 https://www.theiilab.com/pub/Dube_ISS2022_Mid_Air_with_Haptics.pdf #theiilab

One takeaway is #CHI2023 will keep a similar acceptance rate as before. This saddens me as without an increase, these extra steps and added workload are unjustifiable. The quality of CHI papers was already good. The classic rebuttal system was much more practical and manageable.
In summary, the top 32% submissions received at least 3 RR or better, thus have a good chance of getting accepted if the revised versions address the key concerns. Submissions with 2 or more ARR represent the top 14% and most likely be accepted. #CHI2023 https://chi2023.acm.org/2022/11/09/chi-2023-quick-look-at-how-to-interpret-your-reviews
