We didn't use a design or plan. (I know.) I just started digging in the sand and stacking blocks (I've been a builder and a mason). The fact that it is in sand means we have NO issues with ponding or standing water in the GH. For clay soils, consider building above ground but with substantial berms and retaining walls.
In clay soils, a south facing slope can serve nicely. Good drainage is essential.
The block walls were strengthened by surface bonding cement on both sides and poured cement & rebar in the block cores on the corners and intermittently in the walls. The exteriors were insulated with 2 inch foam. Where not covered by soil, the foam was plastered. Triple wall polycarb for glazing.
