Italian opera singer Mirella Freni has died at age 84. Freniโ€™s manager said the famed soprano who enthralled audiences for half a century died Sunday at her home in Modena, Italy, from a degenerative muscular disease and a series of strokes. Freni was the last in a line of Italian sopranos who prompted ovations with their entrances alone.

He was a main presenter on BBC Two's flagship political analysis programme, Newsnight, from January 2003 until January 2014, and presenter of BBC News at Five on the BBC News Channel. From 2014 to 2023 he served as the Chancellor of the University of Kent.

Best known in the late 1960s and early 1970s for his topical comedy songs performed on British television, his work ranged from satirical to bawdy to sentimental to pastoral, with a strong emphasis on storytelling, making him difficult to categorise.

Willem "Wim" van Hanegem is a Dutch former football player and coach who played as a midfielder. In a playing career spanning over 20 years, he won several domestic honours in the Netherlands, as well as both the European Cup and UEFA Cup with Feyenoord.

Claude Miller (French film director), a French director whose spare and sometimes disturbing films focused on the interior lives of tormented characters, especially women, while never losing sight of their exterior beauty, died on April 4 in Paris. He was 70.

His production company, which announced his death, said he had been ill for several years, but gave no other details.

Leading British choreographer Dame Gillian Lynne (British dancer and choreographer) has died aged 92.

She passed away on Sunday evening at the Princess Grace Hospital in central London, her actor husband Peter Land said on Twitter.

Dame Gillian began her career as a ballet dancer but achieved her greatest success in the theatre world, devising the dances for Lord Lloyd-Webber's Cats and Phantom of the Opera.
