A "trap" (English word for the Spanish word "trampa") near "Las Trampas" Regional Park!

Came across this #trap under construction, in a meadow of thistles, while #hiking in the #EastBay yesterday.

Looks like it will be for mountain lions.

On one of the saddles connecting #RockyRidge (behind camera, not shown) and #HogbackRidge (backround, cf. figures 4 and 5 in PDF)

Video of that sprite, above thunderstorms in Southeast Asia. The sprite is a brief flash, in left half of frame, early in the video. We inserted a temporary green arrow, to help identify where the sprite occurs. Credit: NASA.

Earth's atmosphere with airglow over Southeast Asia at night, with a sprite above tropical thunder clouds.

Airglow at night is continuous high altitude air gas optical emission, releasing energy that had been accumulated during the daytime.

Sprites are transient (brief) electric/optical discharges from plasma in the atmosphere above thunderclouds.

Higher resolution (full Earth image link below), zoomed and cropped, showing #atmosphere #airglow east of Africa. Note how the clouds are closer to Earth than the rest of the atmosphere.

Many interesting optical phenomena in a single photograph of Earth from recent #NASA mission. South is up/slightly-right; North is down/slightly-left. Aurora visible at both poles. Africa and Iberia on left; Brazil on right. Sun is almost directly behind Earth -- slightly lower and to the right -- transmitting sunlight in that direction.

The replacement satellite, to be deployed this year, will be twice as long. Anetannas can operate behind wood, so a second antenna will be installed inside the satellite for use in case the exterior antenna does not unfold.

Japan built a micro-satellite (10x10x10 cm) with wood panel sides made of honoki magnolia. It was deployed from the International Space Station last year, successfully orbiting the Earth for 116 days, despite failing to make radio contact for unknown reasons. Perhaps its antenna did not unfold, or software did not load. A replacement will be deployed this year.

Newer PV is thinner, cracking easier, shortening lifespans, causing concern that multiple PV product generations will expire at the same time.

"Due to silicon cell cracking, Photovoltaic (PV) module reliability issues are gaining great attention due to the increasing demand for solar power and the reduction of cell thickness to reduce cost."
