According to the latest #homeassistant newsletter, “Stop the press: #smartthings to charge for using community-built Home Assistant integration”.
Yet another instance of #BigTech changing the level of service they provide after you’ve already paid for it. #DigitalSovereignty becomes more and more important day by day.
Personally, I think #homeassistant should remove the #SmartThings integration. To continue to support it would send a message to all manufacturers that they can gain money from community efforts. I hope that #homeassistant ( in particular the developers of the integration) see a share of the income but I doubt they will.
The “Certified Works with Home Assistant Products” system perhaps needs to be updated to reflect 2 important things here
1) manufacturer’s commitment to not move the goalposts after you have bought their equipment
2) why are integrations in a sytem that is supposed to be “local only” reliant on external systems? Where an integration relies on an external API it needs to be clearly labelled.
The world is getting very greedy to the benefit of the very few at the cost of the very many.
Shame on you #SamsungElectronics
