It's a pretty easy install. Here's the instructions I used. https://sleeplessbeastie.eu/2022/11/17/how-to-use-libretranslate-with-mastodon/
@fgarufijr Yes. But it's on the instance level. An instance admin can install Libretranslate, and each non-english post will have a "Translate" button.
I keep trying to think of a solution that would be workable for this. The only idea I've come up with is for Admins to have the ability to request search privileges on instances they specify, possibly with the UI recommending Mastodon Server Covenant servers.
Accepting the request makes a new rule for "Agrees to be searched," or some such.
I think that would address both the sensitive/illegal content issue as well as giving users control over whether their content is searchable.
@annabae Another little tip: Hashtags are really important here, follow them and use them.
There's no "algorithm" which surfaces content it deems relevant to your life. It's just a firehose and your follows of users and hashtags will make it more relevant.
@annabae It's not as intimidating as it looks. Think of it like Twitter, but you have two main timelines.
Local is everyone who is on this server and Federated is everyone posting on Mastodon from accounts across the world on any Mastodon server.
Hopefully (on our server, at least) we'll get more and more of the Wayne State community on our server over time and your local feed will be comprised of people from your WSU world.
