https://archaeo.social has defederated https://social.freysa.ai, which is flooding hashtags such as #Archaeology and #History with repetitive LLM-generated posts.

I love that the collapse of social media platforms is unearthing the internet I grew up with: blogs, forums, newsletters...

...and webrings! If you have a blog about archaeology or the ancient past, please consider adding it to archaeo.social's new webring:

https://webring.archaeo.social/

Just add the links to your site and send us an email at [email protected].

Thanks to @andreatitolo for the idea and for getting it set up: https://github.com/orgs/archaeo-social/discussions/14

If you have an idea for other cool 2000s-era tech that archaeo.social could host, please do share it at: https://github.com/orgs/archaeo-social/discussions

Additional feature: webring · archaeo-social · Discussion #14

I would suggest an additional small feature that would fit well the archaeo.social landscape: a webring. It is definitely hard to track or discover blogs (see an example) of fellow archaeologists, ...

GitHub

Archaeo.social now offers a #webring for #archaeologists (and not only)! This is a tiny funny thing from the old web and it might be a good way to discover and keeping a list of #archaeology blogs and websites. Thanks to @joeroe for supporting this idea and implementing it :) (and thanks to @amolith for the go-webring)

More information and how to join at: https://webring.archaeo.social

Hope to see more people joining and maybe other webrings from others #academia folks :)

The Fediverse is more than just Mastodon, and so is archaeo.social. We want to free the online discourse in our discipline from all types of commercial walled gardens.

If you like the idea of an open, federated social media for archaeology, please consider donating at https://opencollective.com/archaeosocial

One cool feature of matrix is 'spaces' – self-contained communities-within-a-community that can have their own admins, rooms, etc. At https://chat.archaeo.social we host spaces for CAA/SSLA group (https://sslarch.github.io/) and @Rchaeology community, for example.

So if you're interested in a communication platform for your working group, lab, etc., just get in touch and we can set one up. Matrix can be 'bridged' to most other chat platforms (incl. proprietary ones) to ease the transition.

Element

archaeo.social's #matrix server is now live! https://matrix.org is an open, federated protocol for real time chat – basically, an alternative to Slack, Discord, IRC, etc.

If you're new to matrix, the easiest way to get started is at https://chat.archaeo.social. Or with other clients (https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/), just enter matrix.archaeo.social when asked what 'homeserver' you want to use.

If you already have a matrix account, you can join our main space at main:archaeo.social.

A couple of #MetaArchaeoSocial updates:

1. We've substantially expanded the server rules and guidelines at https://archaeo.social/about (thanks to @zackbatist for taking the lead on this!)

2. You can now contribute to archaeo.social financially at https://opencollective.com/archaeosocial. Our current operating costs are around €100 a month, so if you support what we're trying to do here, and you're able to do so, please consider donating.
