Oproep namens mijn 3 bachelor-studentes:

#nomoa

Having run my own test mastodon server, I can tell you that boosting is REALLY important. That's how posts propagate between servers that are not federated together.

I may get a bit technical, and it can be hard to describe but it's something like this:

Let's say that you have 2 servers, A and B that are not connected. They have their own federated timelines that is vastly different.

let's assume they have their users @a@A and @b@B that are mutuals. If user @a@A sees something interesting on theirs federated timeline and boosts it, user @b@B will see that on their own home page. But more importantly server B will now know about and download that post, and everyone else on B server will be able to see that post on their own federated timeline!

And that's why you boost, guys! It helps posts to spread.

Don’t look for heroes.

Look for people who build community by making space for people to care for each other and raise one another up.

I couldn't find anything about this in English.

But summarizing it, the article says that during the pandemic lockdowns in Santiago de Compostela, there was a chance to study pavement temperature. It was discovered that in places where the grass and moss was not removed, the temperature was up to 20 degrees lower than in places where it was.

More moss and grass make our physical spaces more liveable in these times of #ClimateCrisis.

Normalize Black people coming to this app being safe to speak their minds. What we bring up might abut internal discomfort and biases that you might hold. That is not the minoritized person’s responsibility, though, to educate you, coddle you, to do the work for you. It is your responsibility to not create yet another space where Black people are marginalized or silenced.
I’ve been calculated about bringing this up and now is the time.πŸ’–βœŠπŸ½

While following a lot of people can populate your Home feed significantly, sometimes people (like me) end up boosting a lot and that can unexpectedly hinder your own experience.

So if you like someone's specific posts and don't want to follow their boosts, you can go to their profile under the [...] button, and select the "Hide boosts from account" button.

There is no algorithm on Mastodon. You have ownership and control over every filtering decision instead of some robot.

@yellowbrickc πŸ”₯ this is so true
1. It’s not about punishing someone for wrongdoing, being judge and jury at the same time. It’s not even necessarily about finding the objective and/or moral truth.
Our first and foremost duty was to protect our attendees, and we would rather err on the side of excluding a person who already had a wide platform and reach, than risk a bad, maybe even traumatising experience for the most vulnerable in our communities.
Friendly reminder I'm currently on the job market.
I was the head of DFIR at 1Password and I built that program.

My account started getting a lot of targeted racist abuse and death threats. Typical 4ch*n stuff: N-word, kill, hang, H*tler, etc. I'm a Black dude on the internet, so I've seen it all before. It's just annoying.

So I reported about 20 of them. No response. This is the flip side of what I thought was good about Mastodon.cloud: That the mods don't moderate Black folk for talking about racism. The downside of very hands off moderation is inaction.
