I had the most incredibly boring dream that I was washing all the dishes in my sink for hours and when I woke up all the dishes are still there. This is some bullshit.

@luckytran
The entire point is mass death of disabled and elderly people. This administration has all but called us "useless eaters", once we're not dying fast enough, the rhetoric about how much we're costing "taxpayers" and how we don't contribute to society will ramp up to build public hatred for us. That will make the next step of putting us in their ICE detention centers to kill us even easier.

Edit: I know I keep sounding alarmist, my grandparents' families were still in Germany, and some cousins with developmental disabilities were killed under Aktion T4. I don't need to wait to see how the story ends this time.

This administration is saying that "people should have to prove that they deserve health care" as justification for kicking millions off Medicaid. That's eugenics.

Health care is a human right, and everyone deserves access to health care no matter who they are, what they do, or how they live.

The Democrats who don't support trans people also don't support immigrants, Black people, Muslims, and a bunch of other vulnerable groups like the poor.

They're not even subtle about it.

There's two things at work here.

The first is Democrats blew it in 2024 and they want someone else to blame, like trans people or Palestinians, so they don't have to change.

Which gets at the second, more essential thing: these Democrats are too conservative and deeply out of step with voters.

Bluesky Social

I'm seeing a Farmworkers strike on the 16th to 18, asking us to stay out of all big chain grocers.

It is in all the local tv news coverage. But I'm not seeing it at bluesky at all.

(Just heard it is a small group doing in. Well, I am honoring it anyway.)

This headline is ridiculous. The US is currently cracking down on the people who harvest US tomatoes and sending them to a swamp concentration camp with no representation and due process, and publicly hoping people get eaten by alligators.

⚠️ If you see a post or DM saying "your account is currently suspended for verification purposes", do NOT click on the link. It is a scam.

Fediverse servers do not ask people to verify their identity. There is an optional self-verification system, but that's just for those who want to use it. No one is ever asked to do it.

If you are in ANY doubt about ANY official-looking message, contact your own server's admin directly using their public email address on your server's website's "About" page.

p.s. The scammers seem to be asking for people's credit/debit card details. Fediverse admins will never ask for anything like that.

(Admins might call for donations with links to Ko-Fi etc, but it's not connected to verification and they would never ask for anyone's card themselves.)

Mastodon's actual self-verification system doesn't involve any payment cards or personal identity. It's also totally optional and mainly just for people who own a website: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account

p.p.s. If you see any kind of scam on here, click β‹― below the scam post and then "Report".

When you report a scam, make sure you select the option to anonymously forward the report to the origin server so that they can suspend the account itself. Suspending an original account is the fastest way of stopping scammers.

p.p.p.s. Attached a screenshot of the latest version of this scam post. It's similar to the original but slightly tweaked.

It's a scam, it isn't really from Mastodon support. The scammers are trying to trick people into giving them their card details.

Genuine server admins will never ask you for card details.

If you see this scam, please report it straight away by clicking β‹― under the scam post and then "Report". Make sure you select the option to forward the report to the origin server.

@FediTips
Unless the origin server is being run by the scammer, of course.
@dec23k @FediTips Servers can block eachother, & you can report the server to the hosting provider & domain registrar.
@FediTips this is one of the fascinating things about Mastodon that none of other major SM platforms have: someone to report a problem to, ask support for, or verify an actual issue.

@en3py

Yup, definitely. Being able to directly speak to server admins is one of the best things about the Fediverse. It's possible because each server is so comparatively small.

It's pretty much impossible to reach a human being on services run by tech giants.

@FediTips
I have to imagine the fediverse users must be the hardest to scam. 🚫

While Facebook users the easiest πŸ€”

@FediTips

Could you possibly share more info on this self verification please?

@_TroikaFox_

Yeah, it works totally differently to what the scammers are trying to do.

Self-verification works by linking to your account from your website in a certain format. More info at:

➑️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/

It doesn't reveal your identity, it just confirms your ownership of a website or web page.

It also doesn't involve any kind of credit card, which is what the scammers are trying to get hold of. The posts I saw were trying to trick people into giving card numbers etc.

@FediTips

Oh I understand now I connected to my gravatar and that is why it shows up in green on my profile ...correct??

@_TroikaFox_

Yeah, exactly, if you link in both directions with a special tag in the HTML code called rel=me it turns the link green as verified.

Rel=me was designed to be a general standard used by all social networks and sites so people could prove they were the same person on different platforms.

Unfortunately Google, Meta, Twitter etc refused to use it presumably because they don't like open standards 😦

But Mastodon and some others do use it.

@FediTips

thank you so much for the information. And a big thank you for what you doπŸ‘πŸΎ

@FediTips too late, i clicked it, now I'm locked out of my account! What can I do?

@bonafried

If you ever have problems with your account, email your server admin on their public email address. This is in the "About" section of your server's website.

It is email so it works even if you're locked out of Mastodon.

@FediTips But it is a testament to the rising influence that the fraudsters think to come here right?

@ChuckMcManis

Possibly πŸ™‚

Also it's possibly because of various governments currently trying to impose ID verification on social networks. Some countries use credit cards to do this.

If people see credit card verification mentioned in the news, they're a lot more likely to think this kind of scam is genuine.

@FediTips

Apparently something like that has been showing up on Facebook for a month ...

Two people I know fell for it because it said it was their Facebook and/or Microsoft account ...

The fact they were still able to use both didn't seem to convince them it was a fake ... and clicked ...

Guess I will hear from them what happened when it does ...

@FediTips
Oh boy. Here we go. Should've seen this coming!

@FediTips

The misspelling of "mastodon" as "mastadon" is a dead giveaway of the scam.

@FediTips what is the self verification thing anyway? I have yet to figure it out. Is it the equivalent of the blue checkmark on shitter
@evilcookies98 @FediTips
I'm not an expert on this, so take it with a little bit of doubt. But I have seen people on here who have a green checkmark followed by an also green link (probably their website) underneath their usernames. So yeah, it is like that blue checkmark on birdsite. (I think)
@t_robinart @evilcookies98 @FediTips But you basically do it by putting it in your own page. I can't seem to get it to work for me because I don't have very many other pages to use as a verify thing, but I understand the concept.

@evilcookies98 next post down the thread. Unlike pay-to-play blue checks, the verification just proves that you own the domain that you're linking in your bio. https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/114836938320293957

@evilcookies98

I've done a guide to it here: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/

TL:DR - If you link to your website from your Mastodon account AND if you link to your Mastodon account from your website with a specific format, the link will turn green on your profile. This also works with two-way linking to accounts on some other platforms.

@FediTips On the bright side:
Fedi has become popular enough to make those kinds of scams viable for the attackers. Wooo!
@FediTips I notice the misspelling of Mastodon in the link, which is always a dead giveaway.
@FediTips Mastadon sounds extremely legit.

@FediTips you can tell it's extra legit because they spelled mastodon wrong
@AVincentInSpace @FediTips
IMO because the correct one was not available (i.e. already taken by the real Mastodon)

@ThePfromtheO how can that be? it's a subdomain of id-83636[dot]world, which presumably the attackers control. I assume this because the alternative is that both the attackers and the real Mastodon approached someone who owns a domain that looks like _that_ and asked if they could get a subdomain from them for verification purposes, and that person said yes both times.

If the attackers control that domain, they control all subdomains. They could use whatever subdomain they wanted. Why that?

@AVincentInSpace
IDK why they didn't use a correct name. Are they that #silly?
@FediTips Steam scams making its way to the Fediverse already?
