Reminder for all folks on here, especially #NewHere, that if you're using #Mastodon as your #Fediverse home, you can easily:

👉 filter out stuff you don't like, or that makes you anxious or sad, from your timeline:
https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/#filters

👉 mute specific threads, and block specific accounts or whole instances:
https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/#mute

Other instance software and client apps might have similar affordances.

Today might be a good day to test these tools, as a form of self-care.

More magic

“If you're always in bed, how do you get stuff done?”

Well...

I love that I've been on Mastodon more than 2 years now as my one and only social media platform (apart from LinkedIn, sorta), and I can say with some confidence that most of the accounts I'm interacting with are not bots, but instead are real live human beings with fascinating lives and interests. Thanks again everyone, and may we continue to enjoy this remarkable achievement for a long time to come.

Human nature being what it is, it seems extremely likely that sometime today we will see millions of U.S.-based TikTok users installing some shady or "free" VPN software just to get around the ban.

So even though we banned TikTok, ostensibly for security reasons, we end up creating an even bigger security problem when millions of people install some app that can read and modify all traffic.

A chat server running on powerful hardware collapsing when handling more than 100 events per second isn't acceptable. Events scale up based on room activity from non-local users including spammers too. It's an issue for a server with 12 users too.

Scaling to millions of users requires Synapse Pro

Nation-scale Matrix deployments will fail if built on the community version of Synapse. Huge deployments need a different architecture, which is what Synapse Pro delivers.

"Do not carelessly take the hope of others my friends.

We all derive that most precious gift from so many different sources. From deep within ourselves, from belief in good and benevolent supernatural forces, from belief in ordered and ultimately just natural forces, and from a plethora of other deeply held and personal beliefs uncounted.

Our fight is not with hope fellow citizens, it is with intolerance, despair, suffering, and death.

In fact, we need not fear the beliefs of others, only their imposition upon us."

The first coin minted by the #USA did not say "In God We Trust" (that came decades later)

Instead it said "Mind Your Business"

It meant it literally, but we can take the modern meaning of the phrase (as in "mind your own goddamn business, butt out") as a proper reply to the #US #Government for the next 4 years
