@ctrl https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/06/fool-me-twice-we-dont-get-fooled-again/: »Facebook, a cancer of a company founded to nonconsenually rate the fuckability of Harvard undergrads (incredibly, that was Facebook’s least terrible moment. It actually got worse after that)«
@StrangeCulprits The saddest part is that despite all his material wealth he never managed to buy something remotely approaching a personality. Take his net worth and prepend a negative, that's about it. Net Worthlessness.
@proactiveservices @ctrl This. Right. Here.
I mean, I've said and done plenty of immature shit when I was young, too.
I DO think about the good things he's done, like integrating pgp support into fb, open sourcing llama.. But shit like this just means the overall company culture still needs to grow up and learn how to be better on a fundamental level.
Of course, when your corp is legally tied to maximizing profits FIRST, what can you do?
I wonder what his actual feelings are on the matter
@pixelfed "Remember when Facebook started? It was about rating women."
Fixed it for you.
@pixelfed this reads like somebody with maturity issues wrote it. Also at least export the thing into a pdf first, the squiggly lines and text cursor are still visible
More importantly, Zuckerberg didn’t build Facebook because he believed in anything, at least not anything good - initially the project was to rate college girls on their appearances
You a very true about your observations…
Just found out that people finally started to speak out about these issues.

@pixelfed This must be read in the same tone Kain used when addressing the elder god at the end of “Defiance”.
“Your words are heartening. For you would not fear us unless we could truly do you harm. False god. This is the end. The final turn of your wheel.”
True about the origin of the app, but I really don't think it's meant as an actual compliment.
"connecting people" is what Meta employees tell themselves. Daniel is speaking to the ego of the Meta bosses, the story they tell about themselves, to their lower ranks, and to the rest of the world.
The fact that Meta blocks opportunities to connect therefore goes in the face of the story they tell themselves and to others.
It would've been cooler if he told the true story though, it would've been more devastating, and set Pixelfed apart much more.
I'd call that a very strong character accusation. It's a valid complaint that he missed the actual origins, but I would not venture so far in characterizing a person, if it's based off a single mocking letter.
A professional business model doesn't rely on lies to make money, nor do they help their clients spread lies and dangerous conspiracies. So maybe we shouldn't look at Facebook as a model for professionalism. But that just my rant. You may see thing differently.
@pixelfed No surveillance capitalism*
*but it still owns everything that gets posted there in every way, shape, and form to use however Dan sees fit, forever.
Please work on that terms of service
Based. Fuck Meta
@pixelfed @paul_e_cooley unfortunately, intentionally or accidentally. Dan is following Elon's 'move fast and break things' mentality.
He's doing great things for fediverse visibility... but being a one man show leads to getting your ego involved or missing things (like Loops' egregious rights over-reach in its TOS).
Dan's done a lot of good... I just hope he can avoid an Icarus-style crash and burn that could undo a lot of that good.
..
I’ve seen my fair share myself - tried to contribute to this project… But yeah quite impossible.
Just found out people finally started to speak out about these wider problem(s)
@pixelfed this "open letter" is embarassing... to Pixelfed.
"connecting people"? Facebook was created to predate on women and use their data without their consent!!! it was NEVER about connecting people, it was always about misogyny, ego and money.
Been a while. I’ve mostly been posting on the Fedi, but I feel like this is a rather important topic that requires attention. Recently @dansup has been posting a bunch about loops.video, a federated alternative to Instagram/ TikTok. While I agree that an open, free and federated alternative to these platforms is necessary, I am consistently finding myself questioning the intentions encoded in their Terms of Service. Before going further, I’ll clarify: loops.video is not currently federating, but federation is planned using the ActivityPub protocol. If it does happen, and the ToS isn’t properly adjusted, it will cause problems.
