I bought a package of beetle jails to try and intercept the few small hive beetles I have running around in my hives. The bees seem to be managing them well on their own but the jails will give them somewhere to chase them in to. As a new beekeeper it really bugs me having well, extra bugs in my hives. Apparently it's almost unavoidable so I'm trying to keep my OCD in check.
I'm using banana peels soaked in apple cider vinegar as bait. The beetles like funk.

The rain predicted for tomorrow is now set for Sunday. That will give me time to get everything in the ground. The rule of thumb around here is to plant after the first week of May. Since there is no upcoming danger of frost and our seedlings are begging to be planted, we're taking the risk. If the mid-Atlantic coast gets snow next week, I'm to blame. π
I use this company's cameras outside. They are (or were) inexpensive, easy to use and weather resistant. Luckily I bought several for $9 last Black Friday season.

This AI is getting more fun every day. Here is Pixie, our fawn red bullypit mix, wearing a black homburg hat and smoking a big cigar. I put the before and after. The color adjustments were not requested but aren't unwelcome. I've seen worse saturation added a phones camera trying to compensate.

Good morning! Garden prep continues today after a quick grocery run. I'm happy to have nowhere else to go today after two days of being sociable. I'm a homebody and confirmed introvert so I'm relishing the quiet day.
The month of May has finally arrived! One of my favorite things is listening to the birds calling to each other. The wood thrushes + summer tanagers are back. The reminder that nature's cycles can still be counted on is comforting.
