A tiny wasp stings the stem and deposits eggs. The eggs command the tree to grow a specific structure that encases and protects the larvae. Inside the gall the larvae look like seeds packed side by side with fuzzy tails. The cycle takes two years to complete. Though strangely parasitic, it doesn’t hurt the trees.

Another wasp evolved an ovipositor to sting the larvae within the gall and deposit eggs on THEM. Parasites have parasites.

@drtifftaft @amydiehl I said something similar to a family member a couple of days ago after she said that anyone who shoots someone else for "no reason" (such as an insult or minor trespass) is "obviously" mentally ill.

@Tattooed_mummy That was my initial thought, since I was definitely one of those kids who didn't get turned off by the hacked off toes and heels, but I also know some kids hate it. 😁

Opinions, please! In a retelling of Cinderella (yes, I'm aware it's been done a million times), should the stepsisters' foot mutilation be included or not? I keep vacillating. The retelling is geared to kids.

On December 31, 1995, exactly 27 years ago today, legendary cartoonist Bill Watterson published his final 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip.

How beautiful and appropriate it was, and a timeless reminder of what we have before us in 2023. ❤️
