1869: Congress refused to seat Congressman-Elect John Willis Menard from Louisiana District 2 b/c he was Black

Today: SCOTUS approves extreme gerrymandered Louisiana map that gives Black people only 16% rep even though they’re 33% of voters

Systemic white supremacy alive & well.

This is what conservatives sound like when they complain about cancel culture after saying or doing racist, sexist or otherwise abusive things.

So, I wrote about *that* mask study. We need to stop giving so much air to bad faith actors. Their goal is to exhaust us and numb us into losing empathy and giving up. Masks protect ourselves and our communities. Let’s put that science into action.

Don’t believe those who claim science proves masks don’t work

A new scientific review of the efficacy of masks is deeply flawed. That hasn’t stopped some from touting it

You're not imagining it: many of the most powerful and visible people in tech have been radicalized into an extremist world view that is unfathomable even in other major industries. The impacts have already been awful, and promise to get worse. https://anildash.com/2023/02/27/tycoon-martyrdom-charade/

A blog about making culture. Since 1999.

Once again, we should take people at their word and believe them when they tell us who they are. The NYT is in full-on “DeSantis can’t possibly be this bad and really isn’t serious about all the far right authoritarianism” mode (see also: https://mastodon.social/@mcopelov/109937250816588340). Maybe it really all is an act. The stakes, however, are simply too high to make this the default position. We really should know better by now after 2016-21.

New York Times pans new DeSantis book In the book, DeSantis pans “wokeness” and “legacy media,” which dismissed his rhetoric saying, “all the culture war Mad Libs can’t distract from the dull coldness at this book’s core.” “the overall sense you get from reading his new memoir is that of the mechanical try-hard — someone who has expended a lot of effort studying which way the wind is blowing in the Republican Party and is learning how to comport himself accordingly.” https://thehill.com/homenews/3875557-ny-times-review-pans-new-ron-desantis-book/

Dorothea Lange’s Censored Photographs of FDR’s Japanese Concentration Camps — Anchor Editions

The military seized her photographs, quietly depositing them in the National Archives, where they remained mostly unseen and unpublished until 2006.

The US has seen 21,378 #COVID19 deaths already in 2023, per the CDC.

That is 7x more than were killed on 9/11.

It's more than the number of gun homicides in all of 2020: 19,384

It's almost as much as the gun suicides in 2020: 24,292. We'll surpass that next week.

In just six weeks, COVID has caused half the number of deaths as caused by traffic fatalities in an entire year: 42,915 per the NHTSA

Tell me again how COVID is “over” and those in masks are unnecessarily fearful.

#COVIDIsNotOver

It feels like a large problem that the tech industry at large has an obsession with next-generation markov chains that can produce convincing-sounding prose with completely factually inaccurate content.
