So, I wrote about *that* mask study. We need to stop giving so much air to bad faith actors. Their goal is to exhaust us and numb us into losing empathy and giving up. Masks protect ourselves and our communities. Let’s put that science into action.

Don’t believe those who claim science proves masks don’t work

A new scientific review of the efficacy of masks is deeply flawed. That hasn’t stopped some from touting it

The Guardian
@luckytran my wife and I still mask up in any environment indoors with people other than ourselves. We’re the only people we know/have met who’ve never have covid. And we spent the pandemic in the UK!
@luckytran If they don't do anything why the fuck would we create (and MASS PRODUCE) them???
@luckytran One idiot tried to say that how one deals with a mask as well as wear it properly didnt matter. I politely suggested some ideas to them. Noone tells me that it doesnt matter, after wearing masks on their behalf in the operating room for over 25yrs, thst its OK to touch the mask face and reuse it, after its been in the pocket etc

@luckytran
"Even the authors themselves acknowledge in the paper: 'The high risk of bias in the trials, variation in outcome measurement, and relatively low adherence with the interventions during the studies hampers drawing firm conclusions.'”

@luckytran
Thanks for writing this.

Here is some more background on Koch dark money behind the Brownstone Institute and the Great Barrington Declaration.

How Dark Money Shaped The School Safety Debate

To get America back to work and boost profits, the Koch network and other right-wing money groups have long pushed to return to pre-pandemic schooling.

@steve_zeke @luckytran yes I too read the U. Minn. CIDRAP piece a couple of days ago and exhorted some of my mask-skeptical and covid "fatigued" family and friends. Really glad to see Lucky Tran's clear piece on this as well.
@luckytran This same study espoused by a Republican Representative from Washington State (R-WA 5th District), refuted by the CDC director, Dr. Walensky. At 01:07:14 in the following video.

CDC, FDA and NIH Leaders Testify on COVID-19 Response

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, along with leaders from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), testified on the COVID-19 pandemic response and lessons learned. The lawmakers and leaders engaged on a number of topics, which included preparedness for future health emergencies, the importance of public-private partnerships, data collection and sharing among federal and state governments, combating misinformation and disinformation and public confidence with health-related mandates.

@allennewton @luckytran Both WA State’s Senators are women and Democrats. Or did you mean to say Representative?
@luckytran one example is people in Korea and japan once you are sick you mask up because you want to protect and inconvenience everyone else. So #MaskUp

@Eddy120876
"inconvenience" everyone else?

I'm guessing autocorrect fail, but I can't come up with the word you were going for.

@luckytran did you catch the NewYorker radio hour piece about Covid ? Sorely lacking in relevant info or experts.
@luckytran It’s been proven so very many times over that high quality masks with a good seal work, and yet so many people refuse to listen.
@samhainnight @luckytran Last year my girlfriend was sitting at work for hours 5 feet away from someone who tested positive for Covid after feeling unwell for at least a day or two prior. My girlfriend was wearing a P95 and was not exposed.
@luckytran Including only two covid masking studies of course means they are lost in the influenza ones but the study is surely some evidence (taking into account all the provisos about limitations and data quality) that masks have limited effectiveness against influenza?
@lingon @luckytran Once I started spending time at my girlfriend’s place where her kids are I almost immediately started wearing basic surgical masks around them during cold & flu season if I was tucking them into bed etc and it did have some limited usefulness for sure. This was primarily to protect them from me, however. Right up until the beginning of the pandemic I also wore them in waiting rooms and on vehicles etc. Have since switched to proper 3M stuff.
@luckytran They've been quite clever because Cochrane meta-analyses are usually pretty credible, but alarmingly they've been able to draw headline conclusions about mask effectiveness in Covid despite only a tiny minority of the studies being about Covid specifically.
@luckytran
I'm very often the only one wearing a mask on the bus, in crowded stores etc, gets very tiring but I care for my family and friends so I keep on wearing them. Hope other people will start again as well, its such a simple way to prevent a lot of illness and death.

@luckytran

I dislike #masks but I still wear them, to help protect others from #COVID. In fact, I've upgraded to wearing KF94 masks since writing this article:

@luckytran When I was an editor, I required the copy desk to check with the AP, NYT or whoever produced a story about a "scientific" study to determine who paid for the study. Without that, I forbid publication of the story.

I don't know who paid for this study, but your article is spot on. This study saying masks were ineffective is deeply flawed as you point out.

Consider masks on a personal level: Millions of long-covid sufferers are highly susceptible to infection. Wear a mask for them.

@luckytran
Great editorial!

I only have one quibble with the piece, and that is about doing more studies on respirators.

The science is in; respirators, when well fitted work really well. Physics works.

I think asking for more studies (no more RCTs!) on whether respirators work, just leads to more FUD.

@luckytran
I'm waiting for one of these anti-maskers to have surgery and demand no doctors or nurses involved can wear masks.
@luckytran got a fever? Feel achy? Put a fkn mask on. From now on!
