This footage is from my ride on the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn line S8/S81 to Gernsbach. Freight trains in this region share the same tracks. 🩶
It’s an exciting passenger train ride from Berlin to Munich because a ton of freight trains pass in the opposite direction! Be sure to book a seat on the left side of the train for the best view. Here’s a short clip from the station in Würzburg. 🩶
The S4 line from Munich to Ebersberg passes by wonderful open fields (in Ebersberg) that are perfect for watching trains, especially at night and in the snow! ❤️
The S Bahn station Greifswalder Straße, Berlin is another nice spot for watching passing freight trains. Here the view is long and unobstructed! These trains are just sitting at the moment, but they are still super impressive! 🤍
The S Bahn station Pankow (Berlin) is a great place to watch freight trains passing along the north south corridor, often moving goods between Baltic ports, Poland, and western or southern Germany.
I love that this quiet neighborhood station sits on a major European freight artery. Bonus: full sunshine on the platform, making the waiting that much more pleasant. 💛
We’ve just released a new podcast episode!
In Episode 327, Rhiannan Price and Bill Greer discuss the Common Space initiative, a bold effort to democratize access to high-resolution satellite imagery.
They explore data access, licensing, governance, and how to unlock imagery for humanitarian, environmental, and community impact.

Spring is in the air, and soon it will be the ideal time of year to take a ride on the Rasender Roland, a historic narrow-gauge steam railway on the island of Rügen in northern Germany. 💚
Details:
• Gauge: 750 mm
• In operation since 1895
• Runs mainly between Putbus, Binz, Sellin, Baabe, and Göhren
• Totally worth it, but be sure to protect your eyes with glasses or sunglasses!
Definitely more exciting when on a ship or a train, but this is pretty cool, too! 💙
Sometimes submarines catch my heart as well! 🩶 Sassnitz, Germany
The vessel is Her Majesty’s Submarine Otus, an Oberon-class diesel-electric submarine from the British Royal Navy.
It was built in Scotland, launched in the early 1960s, and served in the Royal Navy from 1963 until it was decommissioned in 1991.
Now it is a museum, and open to the public!
