I am a qualified medical physicist who is taking a career break due to a serious health scare. I am now mostly recovered and am about to chuck myself into a new journey, perhaps involving politics here in Australia.

I live in Adelaide, South Australia.

Random reminder: You don't grow the economy through trickle down economics. You grow the economy by investing in workers: their education, health care, child care, transportation, and job training.
I’ve been keeping off social media for the past months, peeking in at the bird from time to time and surfing here to get a feel for the place. It’s been good. I’ve spent more time exploring other things and watching videos that expand my thinking. I think I get more away from short messages and with long form articles. I’m starting to feel more balanced and discerning about the media I consume. Peeking in at the bird is frightening now, with talk of animal abuse videos when one enters simple search terms of ‘cat’ or ‘dog’. I’m sceptical but unwilling to test this because of the potential harm. I’m happier thinking from recent news that accountability is coming.

The latest in anti-intellectualism: of course this was coming. The state of Indiana is blocking funding from the Kinsey Institute, which has conducted important research on sex and sexuality for more than 75 years. Kinsey is part of Indiana University, what used to be a highly-respected public university in the state, but it seems all red states want to kill their higher education and research institutions. Fortunately Kinsey is mostly funded by private donations.

In Indiana, the culture wars aim at Kinsey — the heart of sex research

Republican legislators in Indiana have blocked the Kinsey Institute from accessing state funds — an attack on academic freedom.

I'm just going to admit this even though it makes me sound like an insensitive asshole, because look, we all make mistakes and the point is to grow, right?

when I first came to Mastodon and people were reminding me to add alt text to my images, I was a little irked

then I read several posts about how much this means to people who rely on reading apps to understand the web

now I'm fully converted. I enjoy writing alt text.

and I think it's crazy this isn't standard across all social mediums.

Trump's CNN Town Hall: Network Insiders Sound Off on 'Disgrace'

Network insiders who spoke to Rolling Stone were distraught that the former president had free rein to “spew lies” during the ill-advised town hall

"Once you build your party’s political base on hate and fear it’s pretty much impossible to one day say, 'You know, those Jews and Blacks and queer people we were vilifying aren’t really such bad people after all...'"

When the Fascists Arrive Holding Hands With the Oligarchs | Common Dreams

Once the Nazis took power in Germany they banned books, outlawed drag shows, and homosexuality, changed school curricula to remove mention of their atrocities in WWI, and rewrote election laws so they’d never again lose an election. Sound familiar?

This article is exactly right, there should be a whole effort at Fediverse enabling work apps:

"The combinatorial complexity of these tools across these platforms (not to mention emails) can be quite messy to track. It’s really hard to remember where a conversation took place....
Maybe the protocols that make up the Fediverse can help...."

EIther get work app replacements that are native Fedi or get all the work apps to speak #ActivityPub....

How the fediverse can help us collaborate better at work

How the fediverse can help us deal with the lack of integration across the tools we use at work. Maybe there doesn’t need to be a single source of truth.

From personal experience…

Young people are NOT being groomed to be gay or transgender. Parents are not promoting this choice.

It is a very difficult situation for both parent and child as adolescents struggle with gender identity and sexuality as teens.

Please understand that “gender-affirming care” is really just “person-affirming care” that helps struggling kids through difficult times (and possibly preventing suicide in the worst case).
