Happy #Thanksgiving to all, but especially to everyone #LGBTQ+!

(starting things off with a 9-mile #run through downtown #PalmSprings before eating my bodyweight in turkey and pie)

As has been our habit the past few years, my partner and I will be traveling to #PalmSprings for the #Thanksgiving.

We're immensely lucky to have some great friends there - and with both of our families so far away, it's nice to spend the holiday with our #LGBTQ+ fam 🌈

@sexedforbiguys Completely agree with this! There is complexity and nuance to how we actually collect this data - and complicating things further is that questions regarding sexual orientation are often posed focusing on sex alone (and don't account for emotional or romantic attraction).

All in all, it just shows that what seems like an easy task - "We need more data!" - is actually far from it.

@sexedforbiguys It's a difficult question (particularly since some positive change might not be seen in the short-term, but instead in the long-term). I'm biased as a health researcher, but my recommendation would be: we need to be more vocal about LGBTQ+ (including bisexual) data collection. California has taken this stance (and mandates certain agencies collect sexual orientation/gender identity data) - it's harder to ignore a population when the data shows we actually exist and need services.
@JakeDesRochers Absolutely! I'm still getting the hang of Mastodon, and I'm sure some connections will be lost along the way, but seeing the introductory posts are a great reminder of all the great work everyone's doing (and all the cool stuff everyone does when they aren't working).

Officially introducing myself to Mastodon! I'm Ron, Assistant Professor in Health Sciences at #CSUCI.

My degree is in #MedSoc (i.e., medical sociology) and I have a certificate in #Gerontology. My work has focused on the impacts of technology use among older adults, although I'm keenly interested in developing and pursuing projects focused on #LGBTQ #health and #aging.

I'm proudly #bisexual and partnered. When not in the classroom, I'm usually either #running or watching a good #film.
