#OnThisDay, 8 Apr 1968, Barbara Jane Harrison dies trying to rescue trapped passengers in an airplane fire at Heathrow. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross for bravery.

“Miss Harrison’s lonely and courageous action should be recognised. Without thought for her own safety she returned time and again to the cabin door to push out a passenger before returning for another, until she went back into the aircraft and failed to reappear.”
