Earlier this week I walked in their footsteps again at Dartington Hall.

This view may not have looked that different in 1573 - kitchen and hall as now. But the arches? Remains of windows in buildings in second courtyard that Emery suggests dates from John Holand’s time (c1390s) not part of Sir Arthur Champernowne’s sixteenth century remodelling.

On this day in 1536 Sir John Gilbert, the eldest of Katherine Raleigh’s sons was born.

His magnificent tomb is in Exeter Cathedral where his effigy lies alongside his wife Elizabeth Chudleigh . The Gilbert coat of arms and the Gilbert arms quartered with those of Chudleigh, are prominent and a rather endearing squirrel, the Gilbert family crest lies at John’s feet.

Welcome to my website where you can find out more about me, my research and my writing. Few women of her time lived to see their name in print. But Katherine was no ordinary woman. She was Sir Walter Raleigh’s mother, and she inspired her sons to follow their dreams.

At this church in Tiverton in early December 1527 Katherine Raleigh’s father, Sir Philip Champernowne, played his part at the splendid funeral of Katherine Plantagenet- Courtenay, daughter of King Edward IV.

Award winning historical fiction.
“This novel is, without a shadow of the doubt, one of the most compelling books I have read set in Tudor England. ................an intimate and plausible story about the life of the mother of one of England’s greatest explorers, Sir Walter Raleigh.”

Spent some quality time in one of my favourite places yesterday, Exeter Cathedral #exeter #devon #cathedrals #history #medieval
Oak sourced on the estate provided the new roof for Dartington’s Great Hall in the 192Os. John Holand’s late 14th century version may have been more heavily carved, but architect William Weir’s replacement is impressive #oak #woodensday #devon #medieval #amwriting #writersresearch
This unusual vessel from Dartington Hall @DartingtonTrust now on display @RAMMuseum Exeter is dated 1600-1700. Probably too late for the late 16th century occupants of the hall I’m researching to have held it. But you never know. #glass #writersresearch
