Poetry Royale: Weekend Generative Workshop

If you’ve ever played video games, you may have heard the term Battle Royale. It refers to a type of game that features a large number of players who play with the goal of being the last player standing. This class will be a…Poetry Royale. While I’m all for writers battling each other, this class will actually be a generative fast-paced workshop resulting in you selecting your fighter (your favorite piece you wrote) and sending it to me for in-depth feedback. Over the course of one weekend, you will be sent an email with opening rules and some selected readings, as well as a slack channel link. Every other hour between 12-8 those two days, I’ll post sets of prompts to the Slack. You will be encouraged to upload your responses to the prompts (full pieces of sections you want eyes on), and to comment on your peers posts. You are not required to do these, if you just want to bask in that endless bread basket of prompts in your own time. Up to one week after class, you can send me your favorite poem you wrote from the weekend. I’ll send you feedback, and you can send me revisions within two weeks for even more feedback. After I reply with feedback to your revision, you'll have another two weeks for one more round of feedback. It’s a Feedbackpalooza! The goal is to have one poem polished to the point where you feel great submitting it to that dream publication you have. This class will only take 15 students. Dates: February 18th and 19th (you’ll receive email and links by the 17th of February, so you have time to set up anything you need). Cost: 75$ (because I am limiting class space on this one, I will ask that this be paid no later than February 10th, so I can open up spots if you choose to no longer take the class).

Writing for the Future: Hopeful Sci-Fi or Coming Apocalypse?

Wilfred Owen, a poet during WWI, wrote "All a poet can do today is warn." We like to think, though, that writing can warn and also give hope. This asynchronous online class will revolve around writing about the future (near or not so near), with a focus on telling stories that in some way warn or give hope. This two week workshop style class will center around how and why we write science fiction. It features two instructors for double the fun. Daily e-mail with writing prompts, readings, and thoughts on science fiction. There will also be an optional Slack Channel for discussions, as well as optional workshopping. You will write (and receive feedback on) 2 stories (up to 35 pages total) or 3 flash fiction pieces (or a combination of 2 flash and one story) and a revision of a piece. While the class will focus on fiction, we are open to critiquing poetry or essays for your final turned in pieces. Workshop Cost: $200 Optional: If you are interested in the class, but not critiques of your writing, we have an option to take the class for $100. This will include the daily emails and optional Slack, but no edits/critique by instructors. Workshop dates: January 8th-21st, 2023 Instructors: Chloe N. Clark is the author of Collective Gravities (and NPR Best Book of 2020), Your Strange Fortune (nominated for the Elgin Award), Escaping the Body, and more. Her forthcoming collection, Patterns of Orbit, will be released in 2023. She is a founding co-EIC of Cotton Xenomorph. Brian Ramos is a writer, Flight Controller and Astronaut Instructor, and HI-SEAS crewmember.

Alley-Oop • fiction by Chloe N. Clark • Astrolabe

The first time I’d held a basketball, I was four, and my Dad had passed it gently to me. In my hands, it was heavy and I dropped it. As it rolled away, I saw people climb up from the lines.

My forthcoming Patterns of Orbit is a book of speculative short stories that use folklore, technology, and more to look at the ways we live inside our own personal orbits. If you're interested in reviewing the book or interviewing me, please let me know!
