Hi all! I'm a PhD candidate at UWTSD in Wales. Working for SWARCH in Devon. I'm interested in all the wonderful archaeology of the world but a special place in my heart for the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East. Thesis on the ivory of the Iron Age destruction levels of Hasanlu in Iran.

Glad to say my chapter "Beyond burned thighbones. The anatomy of ancient Greek sacrifice" has just been published in From Snout to Tail, a fab new open access book edited by Mat Carbon and Gunnel Ekroth

In the US, most people aren't descendants of the people who lived there before 1492. This tends to colour everyone's attitude to prehistoric archaeology. Archaeogenetics have now shown Scandinavians something unexpected. We are almost unrelated to the various groups living here before 2800 BC, including the builders of our most impressive megalithic tombs. We are not a First Nation. 2800 BC is our AD 1492.

Leiden archaeologists create open educational resources on agent-based modeling

The past two years, Laura van der Knaap and Professor Karsten Lambers worked on creating open teaching materials on agent-based modeling, funded by Erasmus+. Programming is an important skill involved in this, which is often seen as intimidating to learn. ‘The course we created is aimed to be a good…

Not every crisis makes the headlines, but all deserve the world’s attention.

A bit more of a 🧵 here on the remarkable finding that women were performing BETTER in cognitive tests WHEN menstruating 🩸. This was reported in yesterday's Guardian as 'surprising'. Actually it's no surprise at all from an evolutionary perspective since this is a pivotal point of intense negotiation of social/sexual/reproductive future -- as all Indigenous cultures recognize (WEIRD science catches up again).

Only misogynistic patriarchal cultures which disappear🩸would think it's surprising. Women in the study were reporting feeling unwell or 'low' mood, and had internalized that they should be less well 'coordinated' but STILL turned out to be more focused and accurate with more attention to detail and better reaction times!

Women perform better in cognitive tests when menstruating, study finds

‘Surprising’ results in tests could change assumptions about female athletes’ abilities during their period, says author

The Guardian

Another report on the study results here
https://neurosciencenews.com/menstrural-cycle-cognition-26246/

Women's cognitive performance around the menstrual cycle: slowest reactions in luteal phase; 'more clumsy' before ovulation? Quicker reaction, more spatial awareness, accurate and focused at menstruation. (Tho they thought they must be slower).

Implications go beyond sport to all aspects of social and economic life for menstruators. We've been labouring under misconceptions instilled by patriarchal prejudices. Science is backing up what Indigenous cultures long realized.🩸 is special time for perception & experience -- not to be wasted but celebrated in a myriad cultural ways!

The amount of my work day consumed by journal paywalls never ceases to amaze me.

There are about 20 authors, just today, that I would like to be able to text and let them know that I can't access their work despite the fact that I'm at a major university and am pretty good at working around this crap.
