We need a reinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment, one that makes clear that a right to bear arms is not necessarily a right to own guns or to own many of the types of guns most aggressively marketed in this country. It certainly isn’t a right to own guns without serious limitations. #GunControl #LawFedi #Here4Kids #GoodTrouble 5/
I can't get over this New York Times headline saying Ron DeSantis is "building his brand" by wrecking public education in Florida. It reminds me of NYT’s first mention of Hitler in 1922, which claimed his anti-Semitism wasn’t “genuine” or “violent” but was just “bait” to attract followers. From 1922 to 2023, NYT is still covering fascists from a marketing perspective rather than a moral perspective.

A few other random observations (all about ChatGPT, which I didn’t make clear):

3. Attempts to create an SNL skit were fruitless—it did not seem to have SNL in its training data & just generated generic scripts
4. ChatGPT is famously good at synthesis, but it’s often unable to combine critical ideas in new ways. If asked to produce a Marxist analysis of various texts, it often produces one paragraph of Marxist thought & one about the chosen text, but can’t combine the two concepts

Dinner on the deck, anyone?

We know that online influence campaigns can and do influence attitudes and behavior. The question with regards to Russia's influence campaign is not so much "did it have an impact?" but rather, "what were/are the impacts?" My personal/professional assessment is that the impacts extended far beyond the 2016 election, and we're still seeing them play out in real-time.

We shouldn’t overestimate Russia’s power and influence, but we’d be foolish to dismiss it.

One fascinating thing about the House Republican's self-immolation is how it is substanceless.

McCarthy's opponents have no specific complaints about McCarthy.

They just don't like him.

And McCarthy has no specific rationale for being Speaker.

He just wants power.

the "no one in real america cares about the speaker's election" takes are very odd to me. of course they don't, but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter. that's what representative government is for

The Seamstress Who Solved the Ancient Mystery of the Argonaut, Pioneered the Aquarium, and Laid the Groundwork for the Study of Octopus Intelligence

“I armed myself with patience and courage, and only after several months managed to dissolve my doubts and see my research crowned with happy confirmation.”

As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.

Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.

Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.

Period.

10 Image #CaptionTips from a transcriptionist:

1. Any words are better than nothing.
2. You don't need to say it's "a picture of…" screen readers will already say it's an image.
3. Start with the framing or format (i.e. close up, landscape, meme, text).
4. Think about the reason you're posting the pic and describe that first, add background details if you have time.
5. Pretend you're talking to someone on the phone and want to tell them about this cool thing you're looking at.
6. Transcribe any and all text in the image, even if it's the only thing you do.
7. If you've described the image in your post, you don't need to copy and paste it again in the caption. But again, don't leave it blank, just put something like "as described."
8. You can add small subjective notes, but don't give too much interpretation of the image in your own opinion.
9. Caption jokes are fun, as long as they still describe the image objectively.
10. Use punctuation, and capitalize words properly. A lot of us have interacted with this tech when calling customer service or talking to Siri, so keep in mind that you're writing for a computer to read, and it needs all the help it can get.
