We criticize the small false equivalences reporters engage in because they can give way to bigger ones, like pretending Her Email is as important as everything else combined.
Just discovered something about the Advanced Web View. You can Pin a column! Under the slider in the top right corner of the column, you should see the option. If you Pin your Local Timeline, for example, it stays up there. The arrows let you shift the column from side to side. #newuser #mastodontips
Lesson learned: when writing to individual people, best to use the DM option rather than a public post. Public posts show up on your timeline and can be misinterpreted by people who don't know the context. But do remember that DMs are not encrypted and anyone you @ in a DM can read the message as well.

11/20/22: Welcome to all the new #twittermigration arrivals.

A few finding aids for those of you who want your #journalism fix: there are a few lists of #journalists circulating.

The biggest, with some 1000 entries, is this google doc:

I've curated a list on github that's biased toward science journalists but has others:

It's a few days out of date, but still has plenty of people worth following. (more)

Some of the most horrific acts of violence in human history have been preceded by a campaign of dehumanization during which propaganda is used to foment disgust against the targeted group.

Disinformation about sexual “grooming” is meant to evoke that same sense of disgust — to engage our instincts and direct our attention towards something that is supposedly a threat to our wellbeing and even our existence. 5/

Stochastic terrorism is “the use of mass communications to incite random actors to carry out violent or terrorist acts that are statistically predictable but individually unpredictable."

Trump & his supporters have embraced this tactic and I’ve written about it countless times over the years, like in this piece about Roger Stone. 2/

Longtime Trump ally Roger Stone promises violence if Congress impeaches

Roger Stone says he wasn't advocating violence, but his style of rhetoric is known to incite it.

10/ "Fact that our billionaires spend so much of their energy in fighting unions should be a tell: What they fear even more than a higher marginal tax rate is the notion that we — the 99 Percent of everyday folks — will work together, collectively, for our own good instead of begging for the crumbs of their largess. The best and maybe easiest way to lessen the grip of a Musk or a Bezos is to strengthen organized labor." #UnionStrong

Young reporters are forced to deal with waves of abuse and harassment, driving some out of the industry before they even get started.

Case Study: TikTok fans torment @uarizona @dailywildcat reporter for unfavorable editorial. The message from one online harasser: "her mouth should be tied shut the rest of her life."
