11/20/22: Welcome to all the new #twittermigration arrivals.

A few finding aids for those of you who want your #journalism fix: there are a few lists of #journalists circulating.

The biggest, with some 1000 entries, is this google doc:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13No4yxY-oFrN8PigC2jBWXreFCHWwVRTftwP6HcREtA/

I've curated a list on github that's biased toward science journalists but has others:
https://github.com/cgseife/mastodonpeople

It's a few days out of date, but still has plenty of people worth following. (more)

A few instances seem particularly enriched with journalists: journa.host and newsie.social have a large number, sciencemastodon.com (mine) has a bunch -- mostly science journalists -- as well; scicomm.xyz is oriented toward science communicators rather than science journalists.

Finally, journalists tend to follow many other journalists, so raid the follows list of any journalist you like, and you'll find treasures!

@cgseife Is there an edit function hiding somewhere?

@mx5bob @cgseife

There is. The three dots at the bottom of your post houses the edit option.

@cgseife Many thanks for these lists. Any tips on how to follow all of these names automatically in my Mastodon account?

@teco22222 @cgseife Hi Debra! You can import a list of people you want to follow:

1. On the website of your mastodon instance, navigate to Preferences β†’ Import And Export β†’ Import.
2. Select `Import type` = "Following list" and click the "Merge" option (otherwise you'd erase your current follows).
3. Upload a .csv file in this format:

@USER1@HOST<tab>TRUE
@USER2@HOST<tab>TRUE
@USER3@HOST<tab>TRUE

(Change TRUE to FALSE hide their boosts.)

@com @cgseife Thank you, thank you, thank you. Very appreciative, Quinn! You just saved me a ton of time.
@cgseife Not seeing Mehdi Hasan on the list. He’s on the journa dot host server. He’s been on there about 3 weeks now.
@cgseife Is there a way for you to make that into a list on Mastodon, to make it easier to follow sci journo folks? Otherwise, do I have to copy and paste each one separately? Tx

@Handmanj Here's what I did about a week ago, which should make it a little easier if you're picking and choosing.

There are ways to import large lists, but you'll have to run a script to tweak the format.

@cgseife Thanks for the pointers. BTW I just realized you must be the author of a book I read on the troubled history of the number [and particularly the concept of ] Zero.
@cgseife Thanks for putting this together! I get a firebase error when I try to to go the link to add myself ("short URL not found"). Is it still open to submissions?

@bourzac I remember there was a typo in the URL, but I don't remember precisely what the fix was. If you look at @tchambers history, I think you'll find a good link -- he's the one who put that list together in the first place.

There's also presscheck.org .

@cgseife Any way to quickly add the entire list to people I am following? lol
I WILL add them all manually if need be but i am still trying to contend with this nightmarishly long list of journalists

@chaoddity You can! If you look under "import" in your settings, you have the ability to pull up a list of people. It has to be in CSV format, though, so if you pull the spreadsheet down in CSV format (or convert it in Excel), that should give you the ability.
@cgseife excellent! That will save me a few decades of time. Thank you very much!
