I took this photo last year at Curtain Fig National Park in #Australia.

This spectacular strangler fig is nearly 165 ft (50m) tall, with a trunk circumference of 128ft (39m) & estimated to be >500 years old! #nature

Apropos everything, I’m reminded of this from Douglas Adams:

1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.

2. Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

3. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

For months I've been sharing stories of trailblazers who have made game changing contributions, but weren't widely acknowledged. "History" after all, hasn't exactly celebrated people equally.

Today I went back & tagged each post

so you can find them together on #Mastodon.

I hope that everyone can see remarkable people who look like them - pioneers, scientists, writers, musicians, poets, activists and inventors - and recognize all of us are capable of great achievements.

About 250M years ago, 90% of species on Earth died during the Permian extinction. All of that loss created a lot of vacant niches to fill.

And not long after, the first mammals, our ancestors, appeared.

I find it comforting to remember that life on this pale blue dot will be resilient - whether we’re part of it or not. #science #nature #history #SharedPlanet

Maryam Mirzakhani was the first woman & Iranian to earn the Fields Medal in math for her brilliant work in hyperbolic geometry.

Her achievements influenced quantum field theory, engineering & material science & may have applications related to how the universe began.

Mirzakhani was an immigrant & became a Stanford professor. She passed away at just 40 in 2017. In her words:

“The beauty of mathematics only shows itself to more patient followers.”

Maryam Mirzakhani was a role model for more than just her mathematics

Mirzakhani blazed to the top of her field due to her talent. But who she was and where she came from also make her a role model for those from underrepresented demographics in the world of math.

Summoning a demon doesn't have to be an evil thing. Sometimes, you need help to move a couch. Sometimes, you wanna see a movie but don't wanna go alone. Sometimes, you order too much pizza. If you think summoning a demon is an evil thing, that says more about you than them.
When an amazing photo is taken, like this photo by Grayson Kisker, it’s a sin to post it without credit.

Any pundit who is criticizing Pres. Zelenskyy's attire is failing to read the room, but moreover, they're just completely missing the point.

A country and its leader under immediate and existential threats have no time for suits and neckties.

He has no visible rank or medals or nametapes or epaulets or brass buttons or starched creases. He's wearing what women and men who are fighting on the frontlines in Ukraine are wearing.

He's wearing the urgency of the moment.

That's the point.
