Here's how the writing brain works:

You hear a quote and it kind of sticks in your brain as interesting. Nothing more. Then you sit down to write later and that quote just shows up in the dialogue--out of the blue. AND IT BECOMES A PIVOTAL DRIVING MOMENT IN THE ENTIRE FUCKING NOVEL!
