‘Northern Boy’ is the story of a gay ABBA-obsessed British-Pakistani boy growing up in a mill town in the North of England during the Thatcher era. His dreams of becoming a performer are encouraged by a teacher, but his family are opposed.

His first love is an Australian boy, living in the town briefly for family reasons, and Australia is where the character is living when the story opens. His journey home for a wedding is the other strand of the narrative.

I love the way the characters feel like real people - flawed and fascinating.

The book captures what that era was like as mills, mines, steel plants and factories closed one by one, and HIV killed and outed gay men. Also the violent racist mobs, now back with us.

The onion went translucent before she noticed she'd been standing there long enough for it to. Fifty-something years old, and she'd finally learned to turn the flame down before the smoke instead of after. This is "The Salt You Keep" — a new short story about a woman cooking dinner alone in a quiet house, grieving two friends she lost and still loves. One plate, set out of habit. The good stoneware, with the chip she put there herself, slamming it into the sink during a fight with someone whose face she can no longer assemble. Funny what stays. The chip stayed. the person didn't.A quiet voice keeps her company. It doesn't argue. It just notices.

"You can love people you've lost. That love doesn't have to die just because it can't be delivered." On missing two people who don't call, and holding the love anyway — like salt, kept by letting it dissolve into where it used to be.
