I’d just like to report that I successfully changed the gender in my passport.

Unfortunately, I overpowered the gender-change spell and accidentally transed the King:

ME: The Earth is 71% water
SCIENTIST: Yes. True.
ME: And practically all of that water is uncarbonated
SCIENTIST: Okay, sure. Not sure where you're going with this but
ME: So the Earth is flat
SCIENTIST...
ME: ...
SCIENTIST: Listen here you little shit
Sometimes I'm just tired and all the recommendations that youtube gives me are for thinking and questioning... I just wanna laugh a bit
How do you all do when having ideas for projects that you can't work on immediately because there are incoming deadlines that you have to attend to? #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter
US people will use whatever but real units

Pre-registration is yet another hack to try to make frequentist statistics match the real world. How often would you make a certain error if you do an experiment that was pre-registered might maybe sort of match p value. But if you have the freedom to make any kind of decisions you want there's no connection between p-values and the real world. The solution is to stop pretending that there's a connection between p-values and the real world

I presented yesterday in CLAPEM 2023 and a friend took this very nice picture

Though I would like to complain that the Series C biometric passports have pretty terrible artwork as backgrounds on the visa pages (THERE'S NO VARIETY AT ALL?!), especially compared with the lovely imagery of the Series B passports.
@gsnedders you also have to sign them after receiving the passport, which is 10 times more nervewracking than doing so on an application form that can be thrown away and restarted :p
@eta the Series B passport I got in 2020 was like that too; think that’s been the case since they moved most applications online? I was surprised mine didn’t get printed given it was done via a paper form (as is required by the Fast Track service)
@gsnedders oh interesting -- yeah, I have a Series C renewed via fast track paper too (...which ended up taking more like 2 months in the end, but that's a separate story) which I had to sign
@gsnedders I think the crown is still on a waitlist. No special rules for heads of state, after all.
@gsnedders The bureaucracy *might* manage to change that everywhere before the next monarch, Scottish Independence, the overthrow of the monarchy, a Jacobite restoration, or whatever.
@ids1024 My favourite part about this is I don't know if you mean "change the gender of the King" or "change away from Her Majesty", because frankly both seem plausible given the state of trans healthcare and UK bureaucracy.
@gsnedders "The words 'her majesty' are so deeply ingrained now in our institutions and systems that it will cost X billion pounds to change, but changing the king's gender will only cost..."
@gsnedders congratulations! (On both counts)
@gsnedders wooooo nice congrats :))))

@gsnedders

i’m all for gender equality and everything but the idea of a male queen… it.. it just doesn’t work for me.

i’m sorry. call me old school but i prefer my coffee straight, my partners queer, and my monarchs female.

@gsnedders
It is also possible (though a bit less funny) that Glaswegians just could not be arsed to update their receipt printers to mollify English colonizers.
