Target becomes latest company to suffer backlash for LGBTQ+ support, pulls some Pride month clothing

Target is removing certain items from its stores and making other changes to its LGBTQ+ merchandise nationwide ahead of Pride month, after an intense backlash from some customers including violent confrontations with its workers. Target declined to confirm which items it was removing but among the ones that garnered the most attention were “tuck friendly” adult women’s swimsuits that allow trans women who have not had gender-affirming operations to conceal their private parts. Designs by Abprallen, a London-based company which designs and sells occult- and satanic-themed LGBTQ+ clothing and accessories, have also sparked a backlash.

@ct_bergstrom This is a great article that also owes a great debt to this one — that, because of the time period covered, had to do extraordinary data work:

THE TOLL OF INEQUALITY
Excess African American Deaths in the United States over the Twentieth Century

(It’s cited in passing in the one you posted but deserves more acknowledgement than that, in my opinion)

The cost of being Black in America.

"The Black population had 1.63 million excess deaths, representing more than 80 million years of potential life lost over the [twenty two year] study period."

And that's the worst part of it.

While I don't want to imply anything about the motivations of the authors, *their paper has racist consequences.*

Their paper implements a detector that they themselves show doesn't work, and that we have every reason to expect disproportionally flags papers from Asia and the Global South—and then concludes that these area contribute the most fake papers.

Figure 3 is a disgrace.
