I'm an analog film shooter. Full frame, ( half-frame ) no crop... I'm not nostalgic. This is simply the only way of making pictures that I love. It’s hard to find any daily sense of order, so I try to create it in my collections.
Kinshasa motor maintenance.
The small motorbikes are used as taxis in Congo. I already mentioned earlier that photographing there is difficult, and I still remember that while focusing and taking the photo, immediately afterwards I was surrounded by a crowd of forty people or more. So I had to be quick.

Photographing in Congo is very difficult. Until a few decades ago, people were made to believe that photographs steal your soul, so many are wary of a camera. Others immediately want to be paid if you photograph their drinks stall or something similar (which I prefer to refuse).
It is, of course, a society where you have to survive every single day. Not just live — every day is a struggle, and you feel that constantly in everyday interactions.

It was ten years ago, and through my job I was able to travel to Australia, with Congo in Africa afterwards. Because I was afraid of losing, for example, my Canon A1, I only took two Chinon SLR cameras with me (at the time I saw them as more replaceable, and they were lighter in my luggage and around my neck).

It’s a Coup Fatal by the Congo River…

For this photo, however, there was no problem at all, an image taken on the banks of the Congo River.

At first, I didn’t know whether I would still use that street photo from Kinshasa for the series…
https://pixelfed.social/c/907544979910358956
but this evening I was walking through a neighbourhood in Brussels when my name was suddenly shouted from the other side of the street. Tister had recognised me and was happy to see me again.
He’s been living in Belgium for years now, has young children, and even gave us a lift to the station... so yes, a car and a driving licence too!

We were touring with “Coup Fatal”, and therefore also in the hometown of these guys: #Kinshasa. The photo of Seke 36 was taken on a bar terrace somewhere in the city . For me, it’s a successful portrait on film, made with a small Chinon SLR camera.

I knew this artist, of course, but photography in Congo is otherwise very difficult. Until a few decades ago, people were led to believe that photographs steal your soul, so many are suspicious of a camera. Others immediately ask to be paid if you photograph their drinks stall or something similar (which I prefer to refuse). It’s a society where you have to survive every single day — not just live. Every day is a struggle, and you feel that constantly in daily interactions.

With this photo, I can perhaps make a transition to another subject.
It was still taken with a Chinon CM-4.

The girl by the swimming pool " Au bord de la piscine " was photographed in Kinshasa,
the capital of Congo in Central Africa.

When you have a photo from such a very brief encounter “ Puis-je prendre une photo de vous ? "
You sometimes wonder ten years later… what might have become of you?

To stay within the same Chinon SLR series, this photo was taken with a Chinon CM-4, also with a 50mm lens.

Maybe this photo will be less successful than the previous one, but she M posed for my lens twice within a short period of time. Later, she became more successful as an artist and probably let this hobby go.

Model or portrait photography is always a struggle and a search… If you can’t throw money at it, you end up spending more time looking and asking than actually photographing.

The girl was a student who posed for a couple of portraits.
She wasn’t the very first, but this photo is perhaps a good example of how I was a bit obsessed with depth of field. But I still managed to achieve it with my little cheap camera…
And that’s the funny thing about photographing people and portraits… I met her once in my life and never again after that. Neither of us experienced it as something negative, we simply said thanks, shared the photos and then continued with our lives.

I’ve shot quite a lot of expired film, but one of the downsides was that scanning my negatives often produced a noticeable raster pattern ( and my lab didn’t want to pay much attention to it ). I decided to run a test with AI, asking it to reduce the pattern… and these are the results.
Unfortunately, we’re still stuck with a prudish policy, so photos that are even slightly nude can’t be edited ( free the nipple, please ) . But with this model, there was never anything nude to be found, so these are the results of the test.

This photo was taken a few years ago with a Chinon CE-4s loaded with expired Kodak Elite Chrome 100 film (expired in 2002). The young woman is a burlesque artist in Ghent.

I used the Chinon series for years — the CM, CE-4, and CE-4s. Wonderful cameras, but they suddenly break down, and there’s no one left who can repair them…
