Ideas that have altered my perspective recently - billionaires are just human dragons, and we know what to do with dragons; parallel is better than series (and matrixed is better still); we need to talk about seasonal shift more.

@cstross Okay, let me see if I have a handle on this…

⁃ Musk wants to IPO SpaceX.
⁃ So he wants to merge SpaceX and his AI company, because SpaceX looks better if he can glue in the $N-billion investments that he's getting for AI stuff.
⁃ He shouts “AI datacenters in space!" This has no business or economic meaning; it's just stringing VC buzzwords together for a SpaceX/XAI merger.
⁃ Nvidia says “Sure, boss, we can do you an AI-in-space chip.”

From what I've observed, people who claim that LLMs can replace artists don't understand art, people who claim that they can replace musicians don't understand music, people who claim that they can replace writers don't understand literature, and people who claim they can replace translators don't rely on translations. If I had a button that would erase LLMs from the world but it would take machine translations away (which is a false dichotomy anyway), I would absolutely still press it.

Yes, the #EU has a lot of regulations.

But remember that thanks to those regulations you can use a single USB-C cable that can charge anything, rather than 10 different connectors and adapters as it was common until 10-15 years ago.

Remember that it’s thanks to those regulations if you no longer have to pay eye watering roaming fees for calls and data when you travel to other EU countries, as it was common until 5-10 years ago.

Remember that it’s thanks to those regulations if big tech has at least some constraints onto what it can do with your data and how much choice you have as a customer.

Remember that it’s thanks to those regulations if you, as a EU citizen, can benefit from the services of any other embassy of any other EU country if stranded abroad.

Those who try to depict the EU as a bureaucratic hell worth dismantling are those who hate the impact that its laws have on their freedom of exploiting markets, exploiting customers or living out of rent money.

Or those who hate the combined economic and political power of a united Europe with a single market because it threatens their national interests, and they’d rather exert their leverage with a bunch of divided and weaker countries instead.

Europe isn’t perfect and a lot can be improved. But those who call for its demise DO NOT talk in your interests.

If you genuinely believed you were 18 months from building a superintelligence that could cure cancer, you probably wouldn't pivot the entire company to horny chatbots. But I'm just a person with priorities. Maybe the path to solving death really does go through AI girlfriends. I don't have an MBA.
There is much truth to this post about about #math textbooks.

PSA: No, I will not stop posting about little girls massacred at a school by a US and Israeli attack on an all girls elementary school.

Little girls. Babies. Who will never have babies.

165 slaughtered (last update I’ve seen). By one or both lawless and oppressive regimes who launched this war. Regimes attacking girls and women at home. Regimes enabling genocide.

“Precise” strikes, we’ve been told over and over. With the world’s “best intelligence”.

Barbarians.

#CrimesAgainstHumanity

Who gets punished for the Epstein scandal?

Right now: Iran

I will not shed a single tear for the brutal regime or the mass murders in the IRGC.

But if you believe the attack is to help the suppressed populace, than I have a new cryptocurrency to sell to you.

Apologies, I was not going to post anymore on Thursday's by-election.... but I've just read this comment by an un-named Labour ministersin the FT:

'A Green victory is easily the worst outcome'....

NO!!!!: a ReformUK Ltd win would have been the worst outcome... the very idea that Labour could see Hannah Spencer's victory as worse than Matthew Goodwin & Reform winning pretty much sums up the problem with the Labour Party!

#politics #Greens #GortonAnd Denton

#UkPol #UnpopularOpinion For years, some of us said the key to long term political change was to elect a centrist, then force them to move left. Yesterday's by-election seems very much according to plan.

Reform managed a measly 30% with a 50% turnout. That puts the racists on about 15% of the population. Sounds about normal to me.

If I were Starmer, I'd be breathing a sigh of relief. I know I am.

I don't want a city on Mars.
I don't want AI in every app.
I don't want data centres in space.

I want clean water.
I want a stable climate.
I want bees to survive.
