I'm looking for a student for an M.Sc. in Computer Science at the University of Calgary. *This is a fully funded position.*

The project: building tools to help understand how "retro" video games were made under amazingly constrained circumstances. While it's a CS position, this is interdisciplinary work done in collaboration with archaeologists and others.

Needs: strong coding skills, good writing abilities. Ideally: low-level, reverse engineering, or compiler experience.

The culture war over gender affirming Healthcare so frequently ignores the fact that only a small percentage of gender affirming care is actually for trans people. The majority is for cis people who are accessing it for the exact same reasons as trans people, feeling more comfortable in their gender identity.

I was prescribed spiranolactone because my body makes more testosterone than I want it to, and as a girl I do not like having excessive facial hair. Easy easy, doctor tested my blood and wrote the prescription. I didn't have to prove anything other than I wanted less facial hair, and because I'm cis everyone involved trusted that my personal preferences and discomfort were enough to give me what I needed to solve the problem.

Most top surgeries are performed on cis men (to treat gynecomastia and create a more masculine chest) and cis women (to create a more feminine chest). Most hormone therapy is given to cis people to help them comfortable in their gender.

We've all been laughing at the obvious fails from Google's AI Overviews feature, but there's a serious lesson in there too about how it disrupts the relational nature of information. More in the latest Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 newsletter:

The @nationalnurses guidance on AI in the healthcare setting is excellent. Talk about immediately seeing through the hype!

AI’s impact on nursing and health care

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly expanding in all workplaces, and hospitals are no exception. Without our collective action, AI’s expansion will accelerate the hospital industry’s race to the bottom and drastically limit nurses’ ability to provide quality care.

The more parenting books I read, the more it becomes clear to me that YOU have to adapt to your child, not the other way around. Yet most of us who were non-conventional growing up, were basically bullied and abused to fit in to our parents’ lives. No wonder we became messed up adults with severe trust and abandonment issues #parenting #ChildhoodTrauma
I have this photo in my office and gave a framed version to my close friend who is a senior AI person at my company. It's shocking the number of people who ask if this is from her favorite soap opera or fashion magazine (!?!?). Her response is always some version of 'Oh you poor thing, have a seat while I tell you about the women of Responsible and Ethical AI.'

Neither the NY Times or the Washington Post reported Trump's statement that he would encourage Russia to attack NATO on the front page.

Both managed to find room for missives on Biden's age & memory.

And they're completely flummoxed as to why journalism is dying...

My kid just used the phrase "My head cannon doesn't match the real cannon and it's distressing" to describe someone doing something unexpected in real life and I am 100% adding that to my useful and accurate phrase list.
