Hey, clean energy companies. Don't fall into the trap!

No one wants to repeat the mistakes of the fossil fuel mining industry.

Now is the perfect time to reset relationships, and to properly consult First Nations leaders before developing renewable energy projects on their land.

The First Nations Clean Energy Network have developed a guide to assist you: 'Best Practice Principles for Clean Energy Projects'.

There's ten best practice principles that should underpin all agreements for land use and benefit sharing between First Nations groups, companies and investors.

You can find the guide on their website. https://www.firstnationscleanenergy.org.au/network_guides

How should Indigenous people participate in the clean energy transition?

1. Energy is an essential service. We should all have the same level of access to affordable, reliable and clean power, no matter where we live in this country.

2. Indigenous participation needs to occur in the design, construction and operation of energy projects.

3. There must be free, prior and informed consent for projects on Indigenous lands.

That's First Nations Clean Energy Network Steering Group member Ruby Heard talking.

Sounds right!

Original Power are doing great things in clean energy installation with First Nations people in the Northern Territory.

This week they turned the new, standalone solar and battery system on at Twenty Mile outstation on Garrwa Country, just outside Borroloola, Northern Territory.

The install took just 3 days with their crack team of local solar trainees.

Twenty Mile is the first of ten Borroloola region homelands where Original Power will work with residents and local Aboriginal homelands resource agency Mabunji to transition from diesel generators to solar over the next year.

They are investing in the future of homelands where families like the Andersons at Twenty Mile are keeping culture strong through home-schooling on country. One benefit is that the kids there can learn without a noisy diesel generator in the background.

The First Nations Clean Energy Network was recently with First Nations people from South Australia talking about the state government’s proposed hydrogen and renewable energy act.

Protecting country, cultural heritage and native title, and being resourced to participate, negotiate, and consent are some of the issues being discussed.

The government says talking to First Nations people as a first point of call will be embedded in the new Bill. They want to make the new Act a great example for the rest of the country.
