The original plan was that this account was for London-related things.

This is (now) a limited-access account, on a signup-restricted node, for a select set of followers.

You probably should be following me elsewhere such as @JdeBP (politics free), @JdeBP (politics), or @JdeBP (senryu and tasks, oddly).

For the command-line and system tools, specifically, see @JdeBP.

@WiteWulf EVs currently have the minimum amount of £195 I think. So if I were to do 5000 miles/year in an EV I’d be paying £345 - less road tax than I’m paying now and not including tax revenues through petrol.

Now that the node is on #Mastodon version 4.5, remember to go into your account preferences and ensure that the new quoting setting for your posts is as you actually want it.

@ianb will more likely be “your unlocked phone please”
@cstross When Jessie and I lived in London in a little 2 up 2 down terraced house, the garden that backed onto ours had an absolutely massive tree in it that blocked all light to our garden, was destroying the fence, and would have squashed a house if it had fallen on it. The tree was in the garden of a council property, and everyone at the council agreed with us that it had to go.
@cstross But the woman who lived there absolutely refused to let any workmen through her house to access the tree, because the last time someone had gone through her house, some 20 years previous, they'd scratched her skirting boards with their horrible boots, and apparently she was unable to get over the trauma.
@cstross It was a happy day for us when she finally fucking died and the new tenants let the council in and the tree was gone about a week later.

Just to show off, they did Cyrillic too!

(Small serious point: with a name like Dmitry Lamonov, it seems reasonable to assume Cyrillic is at worst familiar to them, and possibly even the thing they did first, and I don’t like the framing that Latin letters are necessarily any easier than any other script just because I’m more familiar with them. Just a silly, throwaway line that I have made waaaay too much of in writing this caveat 😅)

Suddenly and viscerally obsessed with these letterforms. Why has that never occurred to me, and why is it the first time I’m seeing the idea??

Even when used as a monitor for your Mac, an LG or Samsung smart TV will periodically capture what's on screen and send it to company servers. Here's how to stop that terrible behavior.

I don’t use the name on my birth certificate day to day and I bet that at least three quarters of the people in the world born “Michael” don’t either. I have walked this earth for fifty years and nobody ever mentions that to me, or any Bob, Rob, Pat, Dave, Sam, Jay, and Kat out there .

If you’re getting worked up about chosen names but not married names, honourifics or even nicknames, what you're really getting angry about is that people you hate are allowed to make choices for themselves.
