#Zoom just* changed their terms and conditions to include using anyone's video and audio for training #AI with no option for opting out. You too can help train #deepfake s!

Living with a disabled spouse, I used Zoom a lot to get through the ongoing global pandemic.

What alternatives are out there for remote teaching/meetings?

[* Evidently changed by the March 31, 2023 terms of service, but I didn't notice until yesterday.]

Cat in Venezia #catsofmastodon ☺️

The amazing golden color of these scarab beetles (Chrysina resplendens) is not a result of pigmentation or actual metal, but ≈70 microscropic chitin layers of decreasing thickness that reflect light to produce a metallic effect.

Very nice walking around Ferrara yesterday evening before leaving today at the end of SMBE
“Save the date”: our President just announced that #smbe2025 will be in Beijing!
@SMBEmeetings
Jeffrey Thompson: how can closely related animals among echinoderms evolve such different body plans? E.g. Sea cucumbers and urchins #SMBE2023
Maria Eleonora Rossi: alternative fossil calibrations impact estimates of sponge evolution, which is key to understanding origin of animals and changes in paleoenvironment. She focuses on morphology structure: spicules, because biochemical markers have been shown to be shared with unicellular eukaryotes. #SMBE2023
Eduard Ocaña-Pallarès: thanks to a robust phylogeny combining abundant genomic data, fossil information, and advanced phylogenetic methods, was able to date horizontal gene transfers in fungi, and find that the crown group of fungi would be ≈1.2Bya, older than most people expected. #SMBE2023
Eduard Ocaña-Pallarès: Reconstruction of the fungal tree of life. HUGE: fungi have terrestrialized >1.2 BYA!!!
Solving the fungal tree of life prove to be extremely difficult and is a question that scientists have been sealing with for a very long time. Eduard and team used very intricate methods (too long to explain here), using pectin enzymes as a root for the fungal tree, thus making huge leaps in understand in the phylogeny of fungi.

I am some what biased as Giullia and I work together on the evolution of moulting. I find this project and questions about one of the most universal trait in arthropod post-embryonic development to be of utmost importance and interest for the deep evolutionary mysteries.
