I dream and code a lot
At this point if you're still saying you're not endorsing either candidate, I'm just gonna assume you're trying to cover your ass in case the fashies win
My depressive episodes routinely confuse me by their contradictory nature. Inwardly It's a riptide that spins me head over heels so idk which way is up but the outward manifestation of that would belie a calm river. I wrote the other day that: "idk if this current is warm or cold/calm or raging/stormy or clear/its just endlessly carrying me/until it ends and I'm me again". @aemstuz nah and that's totally fair - oftentimes we're not even encouraged to think of viable alternatives. For me at least, the place to look is improving worker wages and not relying on the truckle-down economics of getting the publisher more money and then hoping the writers see more in their paycheck as a result, if that makes sense. More of a bottom up approach as opposed to a more top down one
@aemstuz I should amend something - it doesnt assume the proceeds all go to the author, but it does imply that those paywalls are the only way an author gets paid
@aemstuz this is assuming the proceeds from the paywalls all go to the author. But the money goes to the publisher first, who then decides what's appropriate to give back to the author - I'd argue that a publisher, whether news or academic, taking a hit in online subscription revenue and paying their writers more at a base level would be an option. Authors have even spoken out against paywalls since they create hierarchical access to information, as this article suggests: https://www.publishing.umich.edu/stories-of-impact/Breaking%20Down%20the%20Paywall:%20Author%20Relationships%20with%20Open%20Access
Whenever I'm trying to read a news article or an academic paper and I'm greeted with "you've run out of free articles for the month" or "sign up to read this!" I just....knowledge should be free. Everyone say it with me now: KNOWLEDGE. SHOULD. BE. FREE. #knowledge #accesstoknowledge #paytoread #dystopia #neolibs #commodification
@echobit would gladly put my life at risk to chill in that book nook

The Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words.

Genocides do not start with mass murder. That's where they end up.

Genocides & other mass atrocity crimes begin with words - specifically, with powerful people dehumanizing a minority.

Once they are seen as less than human, anything is possible, even mass murder.

👉 You can speak out loudly today for the rights of others, or you can stay silent & wait for tomorrow, when your rights will be taken away too.

@rbreich billionaires get in hot water, throw some money at a charity and get good pr and a sweet tax break. Seems legit to me /s
