Entomologist during working hours, ornithologist in heart, collector of random things. A little bit of everything.
It's a cold winter here in Czech, saw a robin trying to feed on a fat ball today. It seemed so unprepared for the task it tried to accomplish. It couldn't claw in and hold on the moving ball, then it tried to do it "colibri style" and couldn't do it either. In the end it settled for picking up bits and pieces from the floor. Actually I had never seen a robin at the bird feeder before.
The scientific name for the Pied-billed Grebe is Podilymbus podiceps, which was derived from "feet at the buttocks" - which this picture shows very well. One of the cutest birds around the harbor. I suspect @[email protected] may like this bird? #Birds 🪶 #EastCoastKin #Photography.

We are absolutely thrilled to share that Green Shores has won the Nature of Scotland Award for Coasts and Waters! We loved that the judges particularly commended the scale, impact, and community involvement of our project in tackling crucial issues that affect us all in Scotland.

A big thank you to the #rspb, to our wonderful sponsors #NatureScot, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, #ArmyInScotland , St Andrews Links Trust, Fife Council, University of St Andrews, and to our amazing volunteers.

Black-headed Gull

Fairly small gull, common and widespread across Eurasia. All plumages have big white blaze on leading edge of wing. Breeding adult has dark brown (not black) hood, red bill and legs; nonbreeding and immature have dark ear spot on white head, dark tip to red bill. Juvenile has mottled brownish back, which molts to pale gray by winter. Can be found in essentially any wet habitat, from duck ponds and farm fields to wild wetlands and seacoasts. Locally occurs in flocks of hundreds, sometimes thousands. Rare but regular vagrant to North America, especially in the northeast, where usually seen singly among flocks of Bonaparte’s or Ring-billed Gulls. Compared to nonbreeding Bonaparte’s, note Black-headed’s red bill, dark red legs, and more extensive black in underwings.

In 1970, 55 years ago today, the Oregon Department of Transportation blew up a whale carcass that had washed up on the beach in Florence. Or at least they tried to blow it up.

They managed to scatter stinking rotting whale flesh quite some distance. Resulting in terror or hilarity depending on where you were standing.

The local TV news coverage is the stuff of legends.

While planting trees today, we observed 2 sparrowhawks fighting over a prey, which one of them was already carrying. A moment later it dropped the prey basically on our heads. Turns out it was a bat! It's not uncommon for sparrowhawks to hunt bats, I have seen it happening before. Bat seemed kind of fine, but as it didn't fly we gave to animal rescue for them to take care of the animal.
