lonely extrovert@zvrt wow, that thing is huge!! we have pileated woodpeckers here in north america and they're gigantic, but according to wikipedia the black woodpecker is even bigger. wild. easy to see their dinosaur origins at this size.
@rothko Yeah, black woodpeckers are the biggest woodpeckers in the Old World. It's also the biggest species in the Dryocopus genus, which includes the Pileated Woodpecker. Dryocopus includes the biggest woodpeckers around, so it's safe to say that the black woodpecker is the biggest of them all. :)
