Entomologist during working hours, ornithologist in heart, collector of random things. A little bit of everything.
While planting trees today, we observed 2 sparrowhawks fighting over a prey, which one of them was already carrying. A moment later it dropped the prey basically on our heads. Turns out it was a bat! It's not uncommon for sparrowhawks to hunt bats, I have seen it happening before. Bat seemed kind of fine, but as it didn't fly we gave to animal rescue for them to take care of the animal.
After the nest is finished, the egg laying starts. Female wakes up in the morning, lays an egg and leaves until later. It gives plenty of time for other birds to come to the nest and to their own little business. Here is tree sparrow nest with a tit egg and with a tree sparrow egg. The tit egg appeared first. No idea what is happening there.
The great tit breeding season has been kind of late, despite the very warm March and beginning of April. It's probably one of the latest in recent years. Only today we got the first confirmed great tit nest with 4 eggs. #ornithology #fieldwork
Quick question here - maybe someone can give some ID of this insect? I'm watching videos of great tits of Czech republic bringing food to their chicks. I'm guessing it might be Diptera, but I'm not really sure. I would say it's about 1cm long, with very particular wing venation.
Seeing snowdrops flowering brings a smile and hope of the coming spring. On the other hand it makes me worried and sad, because it's just the beginning of February. Everything should be covered in snow and temperatures should be below 0. It was +14 today.
Enjoyed the sunny day and went to look at the little group of barnacle geese hanging out at the river bank. They have spent about a week here and seem to be happy, undisturbed and not escapee birds. Barnacles are quite a rarity here in southern Czech. Took a documentary phone photo.
Winter is back in the Czech republic, which means that the bird feeder needs a refill as it's getting busy again.
Could start a photo collection of bird boxes people are trying to sell. This one is a cute ceramics, but without any option to open it for cleaning, unless you break it of course. Also I'm wondering what happens when a curious woodpecker comes to peck on it.
Mist coming from the frozen ponds and very wintery sounds around - few tits here and there, jays and mallards in some openings. Couldn't actually see the ducks well just silhouettes on the ice.
Long time no see, Syrian woodpecker! Species 182 in the yearlist, accompanied with nice views from Brno castle hill.
