Voted lovey-dovey couple 2021 by Devoted Dove magazine, Fred and Wilma's life story and other musings can now be shared on Mastodon. Both are agented by their human neighbor, Julie Penman Livesey, who is British, but lives in California. Fred and Wilma are only mildly interested that Julie is a middle grade fantasy writer, ex animation artist, and baker of pretty good cakes. Julie also enjoys archaic, rare and dialectal wordplay.

After four months in places unknown, Fred and Wilma are back! Fred has already checked the nest out and is keeping a close eye on it. Wilma is determined to relax and enjoy the sun for a while longer before the grueling months of nighttime nesting ahead. Julie is so happy to see them.

I imagine that all of you have now bought multiple copies of 'Days Like These' to give as Xmas presents but just in case you haven't, this page has links to some of the bookshops where you can buy it online.

It can be found in your local, friendly bookshop, too.

Today’s poem consists entirely of the first lines of poems I shall never write. It’s called ‘Index of Discarded First Lines’.

Though there has been no sighting of Fred and Wilma since September, Julie can't help but glance up through the window to their nest, whenever she's in the kitchen. Assuming they survive the mild Southern California winter, Fred and Wilma can be expected to show up at Twiglet Drive again in January. In the meantime, Julie wanted to share this rare sighting her husband recently photographed – an albino squirrel foraging for food at the Capitol Mall in Washington DC. #bird #birdsite #birdlife
9/11/22, pt 2/2 – That said, I’m really looking forward to just sitting back on a nice perch, sleeping and eating whenever I feel like it, and listening to stories from my fellow doves – and of course, hanging out with my lovely Fred. Yes, it’s a good life. You probably won’t hear from me for a while, but keep an eye out. Ariel willing, I’ll be back before you know it! Ta-ta!

9/11/22, pt 1/2 – I’m glad we don’t have to fly away every winter and face all those dangers, though. We’ve had little reason to fear the giant folk here in our garden, and even the white fanged beast has protected us more than pestered us, truth be told. Fred and I have had an excellent season, if I do say so myself. Eleven squabs! Only one didn’t hatch, the poor mite.

9/6/22, pt 3/3 – I asked Fred, “why not just stay here where it’s nice and warm all year round, and giant folk aren’t killing you by the hundreds?” Fred’s so wise, though. He said that they just have to. It’s built into them to do it, and sometimes he envies the adventures they have, and the amazing sights they must see. They have his utmost respect.

9/6/22, pt 2/3 – Some of them are missing toes because the weather where they live suddenly turns so bitter, that their toes freeze and fall off. Would you believe it? I’ve also heard some terrible stories of whole flocks of doves being shot out of the sky by nasty black pebbles that other doves hiding in trees said was done by cruel giant folk. If that’s what those doves have to go through every year, why do they go back?

9/6/22, pt 1/3 – I’m looking forward to bumping into some of our squabs this fall – all grown up and had squabs of their own. I must be a grandmother by now, surely? Yes, I enjoy the fall and winter here. For a little while after breeding season, we’re joined by doves traveling south from colder places up north. I have to say, they have a hard life, compared to us.
