@espiers.bsky.social a local cop who raised a couple terrible kids gets paid 300k / yr plus some bonuses. He's not Colombo. He's not even Frank Drebin. Whatever bad guy he's ever caught was when someone called 911 and said say hey there's a bad guy doing bad guy stuff.

Thats 3 real good teachers salaries. If the teachers do their jobs right the kids might not grow up to be a bad guy someone's calling the overpaid cop to handle.

This is a good idea: a city law requiring local police encountering ICE operations to try to “verify the credentials of the on-scene federal lead-agent, supervisor, or agent in charge" and to capture their attempts to verify the agents’ identities on body-worn cameras.

Places other than the US absolutely have to take over basic observational Earth science. The amount of money involved is minuscule but other countries have gotten using to the US doing it and they have to accept the new reality which is that the US is not going to be trustworthy for a long time.
