it is incredibly strange. When I logged in, the tweet was actually still up, but *wasn't* displayed on my profile. (link to twitter if you are interested: https://twitter.com/akcayerol/status/1601929147131260928) Everything up to that point seemed to be in place.

In the time it took to write this, the tweet appeared back on my profile. It is a very strange thing tho: makes me think there is some tinkering with visibility of mastodon links going on...

Tomorrow graduation of another great group. Jared Bennett MS and Kimani Smith BS. I feel lucky.

In honor of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, here is a statistic that should horrify every American:

In the US, 11.4 people per 100k population died in crashes in 2020. Comparable figures for a few peer nations:

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ: 6.3 killed per 100k population
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ: 4.2
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท: 4.1
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ: 3.3
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ: 2.9
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต: 2.7

Amid fun calls to return to BlackPlanet, Iโ€™m wondering what it would take to launch a major Black-focused Mastodon instance? I donโ€™t have the time to take this on myself but would be happy to work with others. So far, all Iโ€™ve seen is: https://blacktwitter.io/about

Anyone else already work on something like this?

Remember when you first heard about Black twitter and thought it was actually a separate website? Was that just me?

Let's do an icebreaker. Respond to this toot with your favorite biome and why.

I'll start: I like tropical rainforests, because the trees are easy to walk among and they're always several degrees cooler than urbanized tropical areas.

While Ds had a solid night, missing Ron Johnson's seat could actually be quite bad for them. They really need to lock down every Senate seat from a Biden state, I guess, since Biden only won 25 states/50 seats, and next tier (NC, FL, TX, OH, IA) sure seems stubborn right now...
...and you know, it only comes up every six years. Same with Collins hanging in. So Biden won 50 seats, they missed two, but have OH/MT/WV, for...now, anyway.

Moving servers, so reposting my #introduction.

I am a mathematical / quantitative biologist. Specifically, I use mathematical models to try to understand the ecology and evolution of viruses and our immune responses to them.

I've been pretty COVID-focused in the last few years, but I also spend time thinking about influenza and other viruses.

I am planning to use this as a professional account, but there may be bad jokes.
